Hugs to Isis… and hopefully the blood gases were done and that Dr. Gonto was able to help you and your Vet with the right protocol program for Isis.... And there is a Fanconi yahoo list for only people with affected dogs. It would really be good for you to join that list. If you seach the yahoo list for Basenjis and Fanconi you should be able to find it.

When Chance got his nasal Bordatella he did the exact same thing for a few hours. When it came time for Kiya's Bordatella we opted for the shot instead and had no problems. If you are given the option I would just do the shot instead so Jackpot won't have to go through that again. Poor little guy. :(

@etzbseder: Thanks, I've seen that before, but forgot about it. After looking at that, it shows that my answer would be: Clear pups ONLY means that neither parent is affected, and that does not change with multiple clear pups. The only thing that shows any determination of the parents is a test of the parent themselves (or if their grandparents are clear). correct. The more clear pups (with no affecteds or carriers) you had from the breeding of the same two animals, the more LIKELY it is that the parents are clear…but it certainly would not be a for sure.

@Quercus: Yeah, good point about being covered in vomit from the crate. I think it is quite remarkable that she has been trained to use a barf bag, though. I don't usually travel with someone that could do that (usually me and preschooler and a dog or three)…and I don't know that all dogs would be able to get the idea?! I would rather have the vomit contained, and have to wipe off the dog....but I suppose that is just a personal choice :) It IS pretty funny to watch :D , I will admit. It was easy to teach her – she IS a Basenji and she does prefer to keep things neat and tidy, unless it is something stuffed that can be gutted, of course!

@BasenjiByTheBay: Thank you all for the help translating this info. Yes, I think we will register her with the project and have her tested. My impression was that there had been no testing. The woman we got her from had never heard of Fanconi and I haven't found anything on the breeder- except now on Sally's site, where he just seems to have Fiji's Sire and Dam. This forum is so incredible! So sad the people out there that don't know about the health concerns in a breed and just sell for profit… but you can learn about them at www.basenjihealth.org or www.basenji.org Chances of you finding anything out about the breeder would be slim, I would think…..

My girls keep themselves pretty clean. The first heat is usually the messiest, and even then, it isn't too bad. The place I notice it the most is if they sleep in the bed, then I recommend you get a set of DARK sheets and duvet cover ;) I don't care fore the britches, because every female I have used them on got a vaginits infection because they couldn't keep herself clean.

@lvoss: Do you mean Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance? Which formula are you feeding? They are a good food but their organic formulas do have grains which may not agree with all dogs. Even with good foods some dogs will do better on one formula and not on another. Too true Lisa! My Boxenji does pretty good on the Natural Balance fish and Sweet potatoe but cannot take the Duck and potato.

I let Dallas sleep in bed with me for the first time this past week & woke up when I felt wetness on my arm. He had peed & was so asleep he didn't wake up until I said "Dallas!" He looked up at me, then licked his penis then looked at me again as if to say "what? did I do that?" Poor pup. I haven't noticed any other signs of anything wrong so I guess sometimes they are just too asleep to wake up…perhaps like kids who are learning not the wet the bed?

@Rivermoon: I had heard people were doing the blood gas tests on their "probably affected" dogs. Apache had just turned 2 when I got the results and I started strip testing him immediately. I've already told my husband when he turns 3 I'm taking him in for a blood gas test…I'm wondering if I should do it earlier. I'm still strip testing Chey too even though she came back as "probably a carrier". My feeling is that until they get the actual DNA test, I'm not taking any chances. And since the strips don't last long, no sense in them going to waste….

I haven't noticed Zaire having her tounge stuck. I do, however notice that when Zaire licks me (even right after drinking water) her tounge seems drier than Charlie's.

Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.

@massagemom3: Your right the SPCA wasn't even concerned that they allowed a female to be there and didn't physically check her. They said may she was too hairy down there. NO HAIR! , I kept asking where is her inguinal scaring…my vet didn't even look. I'm going to a new vet! It also explained her being aggressive approx 1-2 weeks prior to us noticing her season had arrived. And Yes she is VERY clean. We just kept her in the kitchen with fresh towels every day, and she had little "show". She had enough mind you,but not a huge amount. She was so clean that she threw up a few days from cleaner herself. YUCK! I felt so bad for her. She slept a lot. But she is getting fixed soon. Yes I am having blood work done before the procedure. The SPCA didn't feel the need to do that, so I said No thank you. Good for you!!!!! Sally is lucky to have a great caring MOM!!!!

If she's loosing hair then it sounds like it might be something more than just stress-of-an-intruder. The stray could have brought something nasty along. Maybe there's mites or something. I would take both to the vet.
