I also recommend that anyone with a Basenji print the protocol and have your Vet put in your Basenjis file

The poor baby! ((Hugs)) to you both. I will keep Cairo in my thoughts and prayers that an alternative treatment or solution can be found.

Speaking of "desinger" breeds… my dh (for the longest time!) was trying to convince me to breed our Papillion to a mini daschund. All I could picture was huge ears that may or may not flip up at a moments notice, a super long body, and long legs. It would look like something out of a Salvidor Dali picture!!! EEk!

@lvoss: Actually, if Willie is spilling proteins he may have fanconi. Fanconi dogs spill all sorts of nutrients in their urine but sugar has been the easiest for us to test for since there are urine test strips for it. What were Willie's symptoms that led to testing his urine and finding the protein? They are at the beginning of this post… typical excessive peeing and drinking... And you are right, I had forgotten about that.... but I know that usually Dr. Gonto will look for the sugar... but hey best to rule out everything.. I think if he were mine, I would go off to get blood gases...

Well that's a lot more comforting. It figures something like this ends up being blown up….typical media crap. My big question when I first read the article was how someone had 600 puppies to lose in one night in the first place...

Our red girl dog has the same problem. Freaks out when you touch her ears with a swab, but loves the inside of her ears rubbed when petting her. You know the two handed ear & cheek rub. That gave me an idea!. I found some real soft white - tight gardening gloves (unused), gave her an ear massage and cleaned her ears out. it worked well. I was extra careful not to push the dirt down her ears, but did kind of a wiping motion out and away from her inner ears. She loved it!

I googled and found this link about it. http://www.cvhs.okstate.edu/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=437&It (We've already established that I'm not the brightest crayon in the box when it comes to computer issues so I hope this link works!) Pat

@JazzysMom: Oh sorry, should have been more clear. I just sent my dogs' blood to Bryan, HE sent it on for testing. I was just replying as to where/how to physically mail the blood, not so much as related to the testing itself. Me too, should have been more clear, I was really responding to etzbseder about the CPP site and submitting blood, didn't even look to see the message was from you…. ggg

@Barklessdog: There are many places here that make puppy sweaters. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3307+1298+18054&pcatid=18054 As with most basenjis they will only go out in bad weather if you go with them. You can always just carry her out with yourself in bad weather- our breeder did that with all her dogs, both puppies & adults- she was in charge not the dogs! Luckily we live in Florida so we don't see too much cold weather. However, in the AM it can sometimes be a bit chilly so I have to pick up Dallas & carry him to his potty place of he will not step on the grass, same for when it's wet from rain/sprinklers. You are bigger than he/she is so be the boss & just move them. They'll learn! Oh & I looked at that website & am in love with the argyle coats. I think I am just going to have to get it…although in Florida it might be a bit of a waste of money? :p

mmm Sounds Tasty. I cooked Cairo's food for the first few years, then moved him to a raw meat diet for a few years. We had a Dalmation who liked raw food, and though she mothered Cairo he would eat this food unusually fast to stop her from getting it first. But when she died, he went off the raw meat so I resummed cooking it up. These days I find he prefers cooked food and eats more of it than with the raw stuff. But it never seemed to do him any harm so good luck with finding a diet that your B likes.

@agilebasenji: Sounds like you definately need a specialist of some sort. Also, you may want to try Slippery Elm instead of Immodium or Pepto. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/e/elmsli09.html http://health.howstuffworks.com/slippery-elm-herbal-remedies.htm http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=slipperyelm **The last link is about using it in pets. And it should be available as a powder or in capsule form at your local health food/green grocery. Thanks for that link. Never heard of it used in pets before, but now I'll be keeping some on hand. Excellent!

Your dog suffered a similar injury, although not from ppoping, but that agrivated it. We had him on similar meds and it has been about a month now and he seems fine. No damage to his spine. Hope all goes well with your little Jet!
