Jessi-great idea!! Like you my dog is also crated so I'll hide it under her bed. I hope she finds it b/c she's such a sleepy dog lol :D Just when I thought I might give them run of the kitchen during the day…C3 surprised us one morning (as I was showering) ON TOP of the kitchen table with his nose in the kitchen sink  So much for that idea!

@Duke: Is a collapsed disk the same as a ruptured disk? over-do it during this healing process. No, the disks are not ruptured! I have another vet visit at the end of the month for an X-ray to see if it's worst, same or better, then we'd see from ther what could be done! Thank you all for the kind word:)

Never mind. I just read another thread that answered that question. I will pick up some diastix from Walmart. I don't really think it is a possiblity that she could develop Fanconi's since she is a half B but it won't hurt to occasionally test her urine because I would feel awful if something happened to her and I could've done something. Thanks again.

Hi Ripley - Glad you're back and very happy that Ripley is getting better. She may have gotten an alergic reaction - seemingly. Off this topic and out of curiosity, how is Ripley doing with the crate training issue in a previous post. http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=215 I hope you'll let us know if any advice worked for you. :)

You can go to the AKC website - www.akc.org - and look under Registration. They should give you all relevant info. Terry

@jessi76: another vac I didn't see on your list is Lyme. Ask your vet about it IF tics are prevelant in your area. where I live, ALOT of dogs are coming down with Lyme disease (spread by deer tics), so I didn't even think twice about getting my dog the vaccine. although we keep him on a flea & tic preventative, the vaccine is another added precaution. like I said though, only if tics are an issue in your area. No, they don't seem to be a big deal here, the worst "pest" we have aside from fleas are chiggers or you may know of them as sand fleas. Thanks for you help.

How is C3PO doing? I read this thread late, but if he's not okay try going to the vet and asking for a broad spectrum wormer. The one that Nala had was a one-time banana smelling (and I guess tasting) one. My vet told me sometimes giardia, etc. can be missed on the fecal test and it doesn't hurt to worm them (provided the rest of the exam checks out okay). That helped Nala immensely. She gained weight and hasn't had diarrhea at all. Sharon

Candle is eating Science Diet ZD Ultra. The vet said this is the lowest allergen food. Comments?

That's awesome…I'm glad the pupper is okay. I have to renew my Pet First Aid Certification. It only lasts a couple years...and then you have to retake the class. I guess that's something I'm going to have to look around Denver-area for.

@DebraWhoLivesDownSth: I have a noneater…. when she gets to the ribby stage, I force feed her. No amount of additives... not cream cheese, not canned food, not real food, interest her. Even with barf dinners she will eat a little some days and leave the rest. Fortunately she lets me put a spoon in her mouth and swallows but it is a pain. We have had every test known to man including full thyroids run... she simply doesn't care about food. She will eat "treats" but not any that could healthily be her main food source. That said, free feeding is usually not a good idea and especially not with overweight or underweight dogs. Setting meal times and taking food up is a biggie. The gravy stuff might be good, depends on what it is. Most I have seen are pretty icky ingredients. Adding in something simply like a couple of tbs of olive oil can give some good calorie boosts. The other thing is that if hte treats you give aren't higher calorie than the regular food, your treats may in reality be contributing to weight loss as they fill up but don't add weight. A good rule of thumb for a thin dog is at least 19 percent fat content. Its a lot easier to feed a dog a higher fat than more volumn of a lower fat food (ie 1/2 cut high fat compared to 1 cp of lower fat). I post the following link while knowing that there are exceptions. Sayblee will nearly starve herself to death, and certainly down to unhealthy (backbone showing) weight. There are meds (crypoheptadine) to help eat more, btw, but as long as she willingly lets me feed her, I am putting it off. http://www.westielovers.com/westieworld/picky.html I have him on a higher fat/calorie puppy food and have been feeding more treats (checked to make sure they were also high in fat and calories) and he is not so ribby anymore. In fact he is doing quite well. We are on an eating schedule of some sorts in the fact that he eats at night twice even though I leave it out still. but we have a routine that is working and keeping him healthy looking. Thanks all!!

I was just about to add a post, when I had to leave and pick the kids up from school - saying that my Basenji did a similar thing. It started with her normally soft fur getting really coarse along her backbone. While I didn't notice any more than the usual tiny bit of shedding in the late summer months, it is now back to it's normal "super soft puppy like fur" too! Great news!

My dog had demodex too. I used Goodwinol ointment, a topical ointment, applied to the spots 2x a day. I also switched my dog to a premium dog food, and supplemented to help boost his immune system.

On any older dog, cataracts are very common… It would be very hard for a Ophth. Vet to mix up PRA with cataracts. Did you take your Basenji to a board certified eye vet?
