    Thought I would tell anyone that has recently sent in samples - it appears the test is back up and running - I sent my sample in about 2 weeks ago and got a notice today that my dog CH MIJOKR's Jacque Chewz Toes is clear. I was very happy as I don't have many dogs - don't breed a lot and he is essentially the last animal I have left of my line and at 6 (gee has it been that long?) I really needed to know so I could make any plans.

    So if you sent a sample in - you should here right quick - if you haven't sent a sample in - ???????

    Thanks, I'm sending my form in tomorrow as I will be breeding Sugar this year. The sample, luckily, was already taken at RI.

    I just sent the money in yesterday, and after talking to someone overt the phone was told it should only take a couple weeks now, but as time goes on, it should go back to about 6 weeks that you have to wait for results. I can't wait to get my results back.

    I've been tempted to just offer to take care of everthing if I could 'borrow' Medjai's parents and just get them tested as well, then if they are clear, that would save several people from having to do the test themselves, because of all Medjai's cousins/siblings on here.

    Thats the great thing about this test. Now we can test to make sure future breeding will be Fanconi Clear.

    I think it is important to stress for the long term good of the breed the power of the test is that no AFFECTED need ever be born. In order to maintain gene diversity and avoid increasing the incidence of other inherited disorders it is important the Carriers are not thrown out in a breeding program. Carriers can be responsibly bred to Clears to preserve gene diversity and produce dogs that will be healthy. Even an affected male can be bred to a Clear female and will produce no affected puppies. It is NOT recommended that Affected females be bred because the stress of pregnancy will only compound the hardship that Fanconi has on the body.

    I should state that if he was a carrier - I still would have looked for a female to lease. He does have some of the things that we don't see much of anymore in basenjis. 1 being small hooded ears and some spring of rib - body without being overdone but certainly not the over refined look that some of the males in the ring are looking like at maturity. I would like to ensure that those features are around for others should they need to introduce some of that to their breeding programs - Still may never breed again but nice to know the possibilities that are open based on that test.

    Here are a few pictures - As I went through these I wondered what happened to that pretty collar that he was wearing - I bet he got it and hid or destroyed it - what indignities we put our dogs through!

    Hard to find a view since we are all inclined to keep show pix. If you are looking for what I mean - it is that too many adult dogs look like immature puppies - some almost too narrow in the front and no 'spring of rib' - These dogs in African needed to have some lung capacity and the lungs need a place to be - I am not advocating heavy and overweight dogs - but I do like to see some front fill, chest and a nice moderate curve around a developed rib cage.

    Shadow's Ribs are wide (well sprung) he is what I would consider overweight, but he is still well sprung. Which I definitely like.

    @tuts - Hello tuts, note that the test recommend by OFA comes from the Basenji Club of America as recommended tests and for OFA this will determine if done that Basenji will get a CHIC rating. Note however this does not mean that they were clear, just means that they were tested. Some are test that need to be done yearly. Breed parent clubs for all breeds determine what tests need to be done

    That is a huge relief about the cheek swab…She absolutely HATED having her blood drawn and has been mistrustful of the vet and vet techs ever since. I didn't not realize that there were many errors in the original test. I stopped frequenting this forum shortly after I had her test done and haven't really heard anything from the basenji world until I got the e-mail. I will definitely get this re-test done as soon as possible and will pick up some strips tomorrow so I can start testing her urine. Thankfully she has not been showing any signs of poor health and has always done well on checkups.

    @LiveWWSD: Yea, she has quite a bit of African in her Dam's bloodline. Her mother and most of her siblings all test indetermint. I was totally prepaired for the indetermint result, as that seems to be the standard test result for alot of her breeders bloodline. To date none of the Avongara Dogs have had Fanconi and only when crossed with American (include really worldwide Basenjis) has Fanconi cropped up. However there has been ISPID, hips, eye problems with the Avongara imports. Remember that in Africa, there is nature selective breeding for the most part and also remember that you need the gene from both side for Fanconi as it is recessive. If nature selection, could be that if affected they would have died before reproducing.

    @etzbseder: Well, I got the results back yesterday, and they say that Medjai is "PROBABLY AFFECTED WITH FANCONI SYNDROME". So, now I get about one more year of little worry before I start strip testing and waiting for the inevitable. Hang in there. It is a tough road ahead. neither you nor your dog will understand the changes that can happen so suddenly… but know that it is not with malicious intent that they pee and pee and pee. There are so many supporting groups and people out there to help you and your B thru this. You can have a good life even with this sentence hanging over you. Best of luck. Enjoy your B as they are today... don't worry about tomorrow. I'll keep you and your Medjai in my thoughts.

    @dmcarty: re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire) So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test. Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true. No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...
