Throwing Up

  • Thank you very much. I appreciate all the great advice.

  • i just started having the same problem with my 4 month old pure bread "B". any advice? i feed him 2 times day 1 cup morning and night and he has only been eating 1/2 a cup. he ate a diffrent brand dogs food a few days ago at a friends house but it was only 1 bit. could this be the problem?

  • We had a problem with both our B's & vomiting. It became a ritual in the evening before dinner. Pee,eat grass vomit and then poop. It broke our hearts to see them both doing this. After discussion with our vet we put them on Purnia EN. It has made a world of difference in them, puking has gone to rarely. If your dog likes the taste of purnia this might work as ours were on purnia one lamb and rice before this. Its alittle pricey $35 for 20lbs and only available at vets which means my keeping a good eye on how much is on hand to co-ordinate with my vet's hours but they are worth it. Purnia EN is an enteric coated food and easy on the tummy. They will sometimes get cottage cheese, or boiled hamburg and rice for a little variety from plain kibble and for some added protein.

  • Vomiting before eating, especially if it is yellow bile, is usually because of having an empty stomach. If I am late getting my dogs their breakfast or dinner they may throw up bile, especially Nicky and Rio who have fast metabolisms. You can try feeding a biscuit between meals to give them something in their stomach. Also, look at the ingredients in the food you are feeding because food allergies could also be a problem especially to grains with corn and wheat usually at the top of the list.

Maybe you should try feeding him 3x a time until he's a little older. Try giving him 1/2 cup in the morning, 1/2 cup in the afternoon, and 1/2 cup at night.
See if that helps with the vomiting.

I wouldn't be concerned myself if my 4 mos old puppy wasn't eating a whole cup of food at one sitting. He may just be self-regulating.

Jazzy is 3 yrs old and won't eat more than 1/2 cup at a sitting. She knows her limits.

Neither of my two B's would have eaten 1 whole cup of food at one sitting at 4 mos old. I started them both on 3 feedings of 1/2 cup a day and worked them to 2 feedings by about 6 mos.
My adult B's eat – Well, Jazzy eats about 1 cup of food a day {1/2 cup twice a day} plus treats, Keoki { 14 mos} eats 1 3/4 cups of food a day {1 cup in the AM, 3/4 in the PM} plus treats.

  • Dick Van Patten's is the brand of dog food i feed him. this is what was recommended by the breeder. do you think its a quality brand?

  • Do you mean Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance?

Which formula are you feeding? They are a good food but their organic formulas do have grains which may not agree with all dogs. Even with good foods some dogs will do better on one formula and not on another.

That is alot for a pup, one cup in the morning and one at night… mine have never ate that much....... and I agree with splitting it up more... have you discussed with the breeder other then the type of food? I use the Natural Balance Potato and Duck and mine are doing great on it...

  • thanks everyone for the advise. i fed him some chicken soup with his dry food and he loved it and it has made him better after 2 meals. has not been throwing up the past 24 hr so hope it helps.

Too true Lisa! My Boxenji does pretty good on the Natural Balance fish and Sweet potatoe but cannot take the Duck and potato.

@elbrant said in Throwing up: You mention electrolytes... like Pediolyte (for kids)? Is that safe for dogs? No idea. I get it from the Vet in sachets, especially for animals. Normally it comes in two different packets and you mix them with water so they combine. I also have veterinary electrolyte concentrate in a bottle. Also from a veterinarian. If push comes to shove and you need to get a Basenji to drink to prevent dehydration, a little honey in the drinking water can be very helpful

Job wise, so far so good. We won't have a final notice until the week of the 5th. Fingers crossed they don't eliminate my position, although with 14 year under my belt I have enough seniority to bump someone else. I'd hate to do it but all districts are 'pinking'. There will be no openings in Illinois. Plus my district won't pay out accumulated sick days so I'd be giving up almost a year of retirement in sick pay alone. Fingers crossed. In the mean time, I'm enjoying my spring break, catching up on some reading, and watching my 2 beasts nap the day away on the sofa:). Looks good!! I might just join them:D.

@Kananga: Feeding him a little food before bedtime seemed to do the trick. He slept throughout the entire night without any issues. :) Great news….
