Glad to hear she is doing better. My girl Lady when she was a senior did a number on her back which resulted in her being less inclined to jump up on things, although it didn't affect her balance or hind legs.

@kayg said in Food recommendations for anal gland issues: I’m going to eliminate lunch starting today and see how he does. I forgot to stress, when you eliminate lunch, don't just spread the same amount of food over two meals instead of three. Cut back. I need to weigh Mku who will be 6 months old on Friday, but I am sure he is nowhere near 20 lbs. He is sleek and svelte and a perfect weight at the moment for his age. Lovely shape LOL. And at risk of becoming boring, I say again, no actual treats do mine get. I measure the daily amount of kibble each morning into a container and from that container I take some with us on walks (to encourage recall) and I dip into it as a reward for particular good behaviour. Hoover and Mku think they are getting a treat, but it is not 'extra' - it comes out of their daily ration ! And I agree with DonC - what exactly started you worrying about his stools ?

Marvin used to strip to the waist and put them in the bath. He only bathed any of them extremely rarely, some lived out a long life and were never bathed. I haven't bathed on since Marvin died and he didn't for years before that. Basenjis lick themselves clean. Probably the best answer is to get a second Basenji. Then they will clean each other.

Diet for an animal is certainly good, but what about the pain that a dog experiences when it has cancer, medications can also cause severe harm to health in a large dose, and so I would still test the possibilities of CBD products for the treatment of pain syndromes in dogs. @donc How about that ! I always thought it was just Marvin being. . . Marvin ! I didn't realise the refusal ever to ask directions was in-built in his DNA. Lovely story ! Cheered me up no end !

@tuts - Hello tuts, note that the test recommend by OFA comes from the Basenji Club of America as recommended tests and for OFA this will determine if done that Basenji will get a CHIC rating. Note however this does not mean that they were clear, just means that they were tested. Some are test that need to be done yearly. Breed parent clubs for all breeds determine what tests need to be done

Nope.... not in my opinion....not atypical. especially if these pups come for BYB or Millers.... That said, Giardia is not uncommon nor is a pup with a UTI.... In regards to Giardia, I wonder if these pups shown symptoms when still with the breeder?

Yes her breeder was great and covered vet costs. She is doing much better. She also checked all remaining puppies and notified the others who had bought from the litter

Sounds normal for prednisone. He will be hungry and he will drink more. Don't free feed, if that's what you are doing. Also, water may be part of the weight gain you see. Certainly talk to your vet. If you are going to cut back on prednisone it has to be in a controlled way, tapering the dose.

Just shared a chicken nugget snack with both boys. Meds for the B- we split a 20mg tablet of Predinisone, for a morning/night dose,he's about 32 # now, gaining weight, eating and drinking lots. The other dog has been on regular meds- potassium bromide, gabapentin, and phenobarbitol. That regimen has yielded good results, but predictable- he'll still have 1 or 2 episodes a month. I've already worked out tentative plans for an endgame. Known a mobile vet doc and friend for years, I'll call on her when the time comes- she's helped in the past with a GF's kitteh. Planning a nice fish/bacon whatever dinner, and a heavy dose of probably gabapentin to sedate him. Then the euthanasia procedure. Then a large rock for me to crawl under. Allow me to share a quote. "And once the storm is over, you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. And you may not be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what this storm is all about." Haruki Hurakami

@elbrant Re. rabies in the UK - apparently we have been rabies free since 1922 due in part to strict animal quarantine laws although a small number of wild bats carry a rabies-like virus. From our government public health website: "Rabies does not circulate in either wild or domestic animals in the UK, although some species of bats can carry a rabies-like virus. Human rabies is extremely rare in the UK. No human cases of rabies acquired in the UK from animals other than bats have been reported since 1902" I think people whose work involves potential contact with bats would still be vaccinated here but it is not required outside of this sort of specialised work. :)

@prasadvaze The body odour would suggest to me there is something being ingested that his body doesn't approve of. I would change his diet to something grain free to start with and I would also talk to a vet who is experienced with Basenjis. Not just any vet. Find one who knows our breed and is prepared to research your problem relative to Basenjis
