One of my favorite photos of my basenji Kembe. She loves to sit on her heated pad @ the picture window. This photo happen to be taken on FLAG DAY! How appropriate with the basenji silhouette!

A Basenji question made it on a Jeopardy tonight -
“Basenji and Basset are this type of canine, also the subject of an:Elvis Presley song?”
Answer: What is HOUND!
Lol!
Basenjis want to be near “their people”. We become part of their pack. My basenji watches everything I do and wants to be “part of the family”. She knows EVERYTHING that goes on in this house. You might want to reconsider getting a basenji unless you are able to fully accommodate the dog. My basenji does have access to a doggie door - but I would NEVER leave her outside alone 6-7 hours even w/ the accommodations you mention. Having a basenji is like having a 3 year old CHILD - it’s a LIFETIME COMMITMENT! And it’s our responsibility to give the Basenji the BEST possible life it deserves. The basenjis will give back to you more than you’ll ever given them.
@mrscastro
Bravo! Well stated! This forum is meant to support all dog lovers!
Also - so sorry to hear about the loss of your basenji.🥲
@jengosmonkey
Our basenji slept in our bed for the past 14 and a half years. I never in a million years would have thought my husband would have ever allowed it - but he is also crazy about our dog. About 9 months ago I had to put a doggie bed in our bedroom for her to sleep - with her age I was too afraid she might jump off or accidentally fall off and get hurt. To think years ago she use to jump on and off that bed with ease - then a few years ago I had to pick her up and put her on the bed and now I’m fearful that she’ll fall off or hurt herself - it has been a journey. It’s sad that it has come to this - but she’s still happy and definitely wants to be in our bedroom to sleep. Basenji want to be with their pack.
I say "no" - these dogs require so much attention and thrive on social contact. You need to be there to constantly reinforce positive behavior and let them know you are there to take care of them.
Today is Kembe’s 14th Birthday!
We baked her a Doggy 🧁 cupcake with hamburger, oats, eggs, chopped broccoli and carrots - with whipped cream cheese “frosting”! She gobbled it down!️
@sanjibasenji
This company https://likeafox.net/ sells clothing specifically fitted for basenjis.
@caaaitlinann
She is ADORABLE - a real cutie! As @eeeefarm stated some more information might give some more clues. There was recently a post “Marvin...Basenji”? - many of us thought he was definitely part basenji - when the DNA results came back - 0% basenji. So you never know!
@Éilis
Beautiful photo!️ Are you a professional photographer?
@golfdiva
He is adorable - agree w/ @ Tanza many dogs breeds have some of the basenji characteristics. He very well could be part basenj but the only way to know for sure is a DNA test. Regardless- he’s a lucky to have found a loving home. Enjoy him and keep us posted if you find out for sure his genealogy. ️
@Roux
Congratulations! That’s an impressive collection of ribbons! Go Roux! ️
Looks can be so deceiving- regardless he is beautiful and lucky to have found a happy home. The only way to know for sure I’d a DNA test. ️
I now understand what everyone is talking about. Iko is showing these characteristics!
Ugh
My breeder uses cooked chicken breast with Iko when she shows him.
Update: I received this response from BRAT:
“Thanks for your report on this purebred, Apollo. We have been alerted to this dog and one of our administrators said today at 17:36:
Saw this on FB - they want $750 for it. He is with a rescue. I think we have already seen this dog and they didn't want our help. Guess we could check with them anyway in case no one is willing to pay that much.
BRAT doesn’t have the resources to pay for dogs. We can only hope they decide to give him up to us but I wouldn’t count on it. I seriously doubt he will be euthanized. Sometimes rescue groups will place a Basenji in a home and the dog comes back to them and then they contact us.”
I just sent a message to BRAT. Hopefully they’ll be able to help this young boy. I’m going to assume he’s from a “backyard breeder” because otherwise he would have been returned to his breeder. This is so sad that this should happen to this basenji. I feel so bad for him.
