Aahley, if your boyfriend didn't check to see if the pups parents were fanconi tested, I believe you will want to get your pup checked asap. It will help you know what you will be in for in the future.

@Phoenix44: Thanks for the warm welcome! I received Kaya when she was 8 weeks. She is usually mouthy during all play; I usually cannot pet her unless she is preoccupied with a toy (which I try to supply a lot of). I've tried the yelping, walking away, gently putting my finger underneath her tongue, water bottle spay…. pretty much every little trick (except hitting/yelling of course). I'm now working more on the positive reinforcement for stopping or being gentle. She shouldn't be too tired as I have a pretty good crate training schedule. I am hoping that this puppy class will help a little with the bite inhibition with the other pups. I will also contact the breeder (thanks tanza) this week and ask some questions. Thanks again for everything!! In puppy class, they really don't get that much time for interacting for learning bite inhibition. I would maybe guess she was removed from the litter to young to have learned this from her littermates or any other adults, like her Mom. It take time and lots of patience to teach "soft bite".. or no mouthing… and also a tired Basenji is a good Basenji. How much time is she spending in a crate? There are lots of threads on this Forum about puppies and play biting. You didn't comment about Fanconi testing? Were the Sire and Dam of your puppy tested?

You may be quite surprised to find just how many people in Scotland have Basenjis - I'm sure the rest of them on the forum will be introducing themselves too! What is the breeding of your Basenji?

I am also in the Dayton area, South-Miami Twp./West Carrollton area. Perhaps we should have a get together at one of the dog parks when the weather gets warmer and is not so wet!

@nkjvcjs: We have a can with a push button that makes the top spring up. We took off the spring so that you have to push the button with one hand and lift the lid with the other. That has worked so far. -Nicole That sounds like a good idea :D We too have the pedal-thing and Zuri always open it with her nose  I keep the doors shut… Welcome to the forum! Your preparations sound great!!! ;) And I'm also looking forward to the pics.

For your 13 month old, how is her weight? Can you just faintly see her ribs? Does she have a nice waist? There is really no "set" amount, each dog is different in built. How tall is your 13 month? For your puppy, what did your breeder tell you? That is your best source? Personally I like to keep a puppy a bit on the "plump" side till 4 months or so… I have had experiences with a puppy getting sick and had he not carried a bit more weight, we would have lost him. But again, your breeder should be your best resource.... And what kind of food are you feeding? The better quality food the better for the dog...

@Grace: I have never been to a dog show but I am going to try to come. What is benching? That basically means that you will be able to walk around and look at all of the dogs of different breeds in designated locations when they are not in the show ring competing (like on Westminster on TV tonite). Most other dogs shows, after we're done competing in the show ring, we can go ahead and leave if we want. At this show, we have to stay around in the benching area until about 4:00. This kind of show is better for spectators like yourself who may want to go around and see a bunch of different types of dogs, find out what they are like, and talk to the owners. This is will be my first one, and possibly my last just because of the hassle and entries for basenjis are typically low.
