Howdy

  • Hello. I have been wanting to get into the dog show scene for awhile. After looking at some possibilities for breeds, I have become very interested in the Basenji. Working at 2 vet clinics I have only seen one basenji at our office and he is the most gorgeous dog I have ever seen. I hope to get more information on this very unique breed and become an active part of your basenji community. I have many questions and can't wait to get some answers :)

Side note: I currently show rabbits and am apart of the Beef Cattle Show Team at my college.

I am in Houston also. During my weeks I stay in huntsville due to school.

  • Welcome. Texas has a lot of b's who need homes. If you have not checked out BRAT please go do www.basenjirescue.org
We always need good owners to help love these dogs.

would i be able to show a rescue?
Im sure my basenji would love a friend but i dont think i have enough resources at this time for two dogs. I will keep it in mind though :)

  • Hi, we are also in TX - north of Houston in Montgomery! There is a show coming up in Houston on the weekend of Mar. 20 and 21, and one in Navasota on April 3 and 4. You are more than welcome to come and meet the B's - we will be showing at both shows. (In fact, we could put you to work! Right now I'm doing all the handling as my husband has bad knees. Our daughter helps out when she can, but she has enough on her plate with work, husband, and 3 year old son)

  • Welcome to the forum! :)

  • Welcome at te forum!

  • Welcome to the group. Nice to meet another basenji lover.

  • Welcome to the forum, do you already have a Basenji?

  • I actually do not. I am very interested in the breed and really want to see if this breed is right for me. If I do decide to get a Basenji, I wanted to go to signet kennels for a showdog

  • If you want to get an idea of what b's are like, you can attend local dog shows, talk to folks who have them. Or you can go to a rescue site.
    www.basenjirescue.org
    and read the reality stories.
Not all b's do all of these thing, but some of them do…so we don't want you to be surprised.

  • Thank you for the read. I will make sure to save this. When i read how they like to lean I thought whoa 22 lbs thats a break. My roomate has a great dane and it gets a little tiring when a 120lbs dane chooses you as its wall

  • Hee. yes Dane are big dogs, but I have to tell you, when this breed is on your lap, standing with the pointy feet into your legs..its can feel like 100 lbs.
But they are really the most wonderful dog…the are so darn smart, and the very best sense of humor often at your expense than any other breed.. I love them and can't imagine not having 2!

  • Welcome to the Forum! I love Basenji's and will always have one (or two or maybe three!!) in my life. But I have to say, as wonderful as they are, they are not the dog for everyone. Be sure you will have enough time for a Basenji because they need a lot of exercise and stimulation and they get bored very easily - as a busy young person you may want to seriously consider this. I think it's great that you are doing the research and learning more about them at the dog show. If you find a Basenji to be a good match for you, be prepared for a lifelong love affair!

  • k.rass, you said it perfectly.

So much going on, I've missed the forum. KD. and I have been taking classes together. Starting with puppy classes, KD has done well. Two weeks ago, we were walking home from class and suddenly confronted by a pitbull. I tried to pick up KD to protect her, but she wheeled around to face the charging dog and calmly sat down. I yelled "sit" at the pitbull, and "down" and every thing else I could think of, then I noticed KD's ears were trained backward. There were two pitbulls, one had circled through the field and was coming up behind us, while the first growled and barked at us to keep attention on him. Finally, as both dogs are circling us, the owner came out and yelled repeatedly to get them back in his pickup. He drove off immediately. These were 70 to 80 pound dogs to KD's 24 pounds. I called my trainer, Ed Nicks, a retired police K9 handler/trainer. He was amazed. KD and I both could have been shredded. The pitbulls were looking for a fight and KD simply sat down and ignored them. My older service dog, in spite of her training would have turned around ready to fight– and we both would have been mauled if not killed. I'm so thankful for KD's behavior, I don't know why she chose to sit quietly, but she stopped the attack. If the owner had not come out, I don't know what would have happened. The dogs might have attacked us anyway, but KD bought us critical time. Has anyone any ideas on how to deal with attacking dogs? Sarg. Nicks suggests a cattle prod/walking stick.

i just realized my post doesnt make as much sense as it would if you knew that i had 6 sisters. i know what you mean about people thinking bs look alike. i have seen some dogs before and said well oh this and this doesnt look good. my husband is like what? it looks just like that other dog! i just roll my eyes at him. (no matter what i think they are all cute…its just this one, reminds me of the hyenas in the lion king, but even she is cute)
