Hi from Northern Minnesota!

  • Hello!

My name is Kristie and I am from Crookston, MN (the great white north as we call it up here lol) I just brought my first Basenji home two days ago! He is 9 weeks old, and I have named him Kyro…I can't wait to learn more about this breed and get to know other basenji lovers along the way. Thanks for checking out my post!

  • Welcome, you will find out a lot about b's here. We have folks who breed, folks who rescue and folks who take great photos and share them..lots of us, united by our love of
    this wonderful breed.
I take it your boy is your first b? You will find out you can't just have one! laugh.
    Welcome again.

  • Welcome to the Forum. Who did you get your Basenji from? Many of us have Basenjis that are related here.

  • Welcome Kristie and Kyro to the forum. Good looking pup you have!

  • Welcome! Very exited to see another person from MN on here! I am interested to hear where you got him from?

    Kyro is very cute!!

  • Cute, I wouldn't have noticed he was a trindle at first if it wasn't for the sign. As an FYI, we have a regional basenji club, BCOSW, that has members from MN if you want to catch up with local basenji people and activites. You can find info at www.bcosw.org or www.facebook.com/bcosw.

    Welcome to the forum!

  • Welcome Kristie and Kyro, he's a lovely looking pup, just a bit older than ours.

  • Oh, please do share his background. Some of us are "related" by dogs…always fun to find new unmet relations.

  • Welcome to the forum!

Welcome to the forum Kristie and Kyro..He is adorable.

  • hello Kyro and Kristie - you've landed in the right place for "all things basenji". Welcome!

  • Thanks everyone!! I did a lot of research before deciding on a Basenji, but I am so glad that I did! He is an absolute doll and I look forward to many years with this little guy! I bought him from a woman in Iowa, her name is Kara (Karazels is what is on my registration paper) She doesn't breed dogs professionally but just has two basenji's in her home. Kyro was one of 5…I don't know a ton about dog pedigrees (yet) but he has a lot of Kibushi, Hacker's and Akuaba's in his pedigree if anyone is familiar with them...I think there are 19 champions total (combined on sire and dam's side) I have both pedigrees in detail if anyone would like to know more about his breeding! I am very interested in learning how to show and handle dogs, and anything I can about this wonderful breed! I look forward to keeping in touch :)

  • First Basenji's

Welcome to the forum! He is a cutie.

  • Could you please provide your puppy's parents names and his registered name and DOB so he can be included in Sally's pedigree database, http://pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com

Were his Parents DNA tested for Fanconi? I am very familar with the Kibushi, Hacker and Akuaba lines and there has been Fanconi in them.

@Nancy-Berry The saying is a very true one... when people ask how your dogs are with children, say "It depends.. how are your children with dogs?" Toddler Leora got her little legs smacked more over the dogs than anything. Not training your child to respect dogs, to understand that a hurt dog can and probably will respond, ... well it puts your child and dogs in danger.

I think they just look solid so my mind saw "bigger." I have one of the Wimaumau rescue giants (44 pounds), but even my 2 previous gals were far from petite... about 26 to 28 pounds. My dream of a petite 18 pound basenji just never happened, lol.

What a sweet face! Thank you for taking her in, she needs a forever home. As Pat indicated, unless you have info on the parents being clear, or at least one clear, she should be tested for Fanconi asap.

Thanks, I will pickup some SAM-E at the store today, I had no idea what dose! I hope Pete has a comfortable time with you, you are doing everything to keep him happy. My friend's mastif-dobie mix has very high liver enzymes, she is 10 and otherwise looks great. She is slowing down, sleeps a lot but has good appetite, etc., he opted for no more tests (at her age, he would not put her through any treatments other than meds). She loved the liver-cleansing diet, is back on regular now and taking Sam-e; like you, he is just hoping for some good quality time with an older beloved dog. Hugs to Pete!
