I am sorry to say that you really do need to do the blood work on your basenji to get the true answer. The good news is once you have it, you can adjust to whatever you need to do. Hugs dear.

@Scampy: Hello, everyone! I am so excited to have stumbled upon this forum! I belonged to Basenji Companions until last year, and I miss the community and advice. I have one basenji, a 10-year-old red & white male named Toby. I adopted him six years ago as a "golden opportunity" dog when his show/breeding days were over. He shares the house with three humans and a cat. (We may be inheriting another cat, but don't tell him…I'd sort of promised him a little sister.) Any other west Michigan folk out there? I was born in Kalamazoo! Welcome to the forum! Tabatha

Thanks for your warm welcome! I'll ask my daughter to take some digital pics of our Sheba to post! We'll try to get some good forehead wrinkles – when she's got those terrific ears up and forward! Her tail's straight and droopy, though -- that's where the "mix" really shows! So far -- she sometimes reminds me very much of a cat (I know far more about kitties than basenjis.) Even the way she bats a tennis ball about -- "soccer-style" -- is quite feline. But she is NOT aloof. She's definitely a people pooch! A snuggler. I am delighted she's joined the family. Will post pics soon, I hope -- Thanks -- Sheba's Mom

I got my present girl from a basenji rescue group, she was 6 yrs old when I got her and she will be 12 yrs this summer. I think it nice to give an older dog a second chance. You miss the cute puppy years but you also miss the puppy years. Karen

Welcome to the forum. When I acquired my dog (at 4 yrs) he was known to be very destructive and even tore up his crates. However, when I took him home and worked with him and spent time with him and gave him lots of toys, I never ever had any destructive problems. Who knows what went on with the previous owner! Talk with your breeder and find out what kinds of dogs the parents were, and what kind of advice s/he can give you about training, etc. Reputable breeders will take the pup back if there is a serious problem and it just doesn't work out for you. Spend time with the breeder and get to know the puppy personalities.

@Mark1491: Hi Nala Cali been great for her first year, only 1 issue with her is the create she just doesn't like it, to this day. other than that she is great…..no messes in the house.....once in a great while she will put her nose in the trash thats about it....... Nala was never really fond of her crate either. It got bettter with age. There are some great threads about starting from scratch with crate training. Cali sounds like a sweet, well behaved B though! Another might be nice for her…a male, though would probably be best. Let us know what you decide!

Responding to JazzysMom's comment about fibrosarcomas at vaccine injection sites in dogs – I had made a post on that specific topic (along with posts on Lyme, Leptospira, Titers, Rabies, etc..) that the administrators deleted. Please PM me and I will e-mail it all to you and you are free to share it with anyone and everyone who has or loves a dog. Below is a link which will take you to the abstract from the Journal of Veterinary Medicine, Series A August 2003, vol. 50, no. 6, pp. 286-291(6) IngentaConnect Fibrosarcomas at Presumed Sites of Injection in Dogs: Characteris… Fibrosarcomas at Presumed Sites of Injection in Dogs: Characteristics and Comparison with Non-vaccination Site Fibrosarcomas and Feline Post-vaccinal Fibrosarcomas
