Fluid build-up in stomach- HELP

  • I am so sorry to hear Meeka's prognosis and know how it feels to get that news. It is just so similar to what I went through with Spot. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Meeka.

  • Sarah, I'm so sorry for your news. And know it is a really tough decision to make.

I have not experienced cancer in a pet myself but have had friends go thru it. The last one did have surgery and chemo and made it an additional year. They spent thousands but the dog had a really poor quality of life for the entire year and you would not have even thought it was the same dog almost from the get go as it lost all his zest. It was heartbreaking to see him like that and my friends (who have the resources to do anything needed, BTW) said they wouldn't do it again.

Sarah, I am so sorry to hear about Meeka's prognosis, not good. I have had two dogs die(with help from us) from cancer this past spring, one in March and one in April. It is not easy to see them deterioate so rapidly (at least both of my boys did), and knowing it is very little you can do. Please know that we will have Meeka and yourself in our thoughts and prayers..my children, following her thread are heartbroken and ask if Meeka will see our Bogus and Lou in heaven..I answered saying, not now, not for a long time…I hope this comes true..

  • This is the hardest thing we do for our beloved pets…we love them and give them the gift of peace, when their bodies fail them.
    Hugs and hugs.
We will all be here for you.

  • Sarah, so sorry to hear the bad news. We are keeping Meeka in our thoughts!

  • I am so sorry you have such bad news. Love her and keep her comfortable and enjoy the time you have. I hope she will improve so you will have more 'good times' with her. Hugs to you, it is not an easy road you will have to travel.

  • What happened with the ultrasound Sarah?

  • I'm so sorry. I went through a similiar situation with my 12 yo beagle. We had to remove the spleen in his case but the cancer had already spread further. I went the steroid route and he was comfortable for another month or so. I sincerely hope they work for you and give Meeka some comfort.

  • Sarah, I'm so sorry.

  • Im sure you have made the right decision, hopefuly the steroids will help Meeka feel better and give her some quality time with you. My thoughts are with you

  • thanks everyone for your kind words. it's nice to have a place to go where people understand.

  • Just checking in today to say I hope you had a good day. I hope you are all doing well. You're still in my thoughts and prayers

  • I'm so sorry to hear your news. I hope your Meeka is comfortable. Hugs to you both.

  • So sorry to hear this.. I hope Meeka and you enjoy your time together. I think it's really brave that you decide not to start chemo etc. You are in my thoughts. Hugs.

  • Sarah, you guys are in our thoughts.

  • the steroids have started to help a lot. she's acting like her old self again- which i'm happy because i can tell she's feeling good, but its also hard because i know its not going to last.. so i'm just trying to enjoy the time we have and not think about the future..

Good to hear that Meeka is coming back, if ever so slightly. Enjoy it for as long as you can..

  • I'm glad Meeka is feeling better and you have more time with her.
You are so right, the forum is a wonderful place for advice, helpful suggestions, and an understanding ear. We are blessed to have such caring members.

  • Do sometime special that you both like while Meeka is feeling better and gets lots and lots of pictures. Give Meeka something special likes to eat and take pictures take pictures playing and sleeping. I am not crazy we did with YOYO and it does help at another time. Have a good rest of the day.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about Meeka's situation. This is the first time I've read the thread all the way through and I have to say I'm just sitting here in tears. I can't imagine what you must be going through. But please know we all care about you and are sending good vibes your way. Our babies are so precious. This is just so heartbreaking.

@nick4 Sounds like an allergy or something biting him. For sure the vets and see what they say. Benadryl for sure, as far as I know it does no harm if you dose correctly.

I would not have posted if I beleived it to be a scam. For folks who do worry about such things - one can always let the person know they would be more than willing to donate directly to the vet clinic for care of their pet. M.C. I too beleive they either got what they needed to help their little girl or they realized they put too much info on craigslist. I am hoping for the former. As for Drew - yes - that is a picture of him. If you really want to know - email me privately and I can send you a copy of an article I was asked to write for an Aussie pubication re: him.

@khanis: I have NEVER heard of these legendary fleas or mosquitos…. and I am a Portland native... and have NEVER had a flea issue with my basenjis [Whippet, IG, RR, Newfs, or cats]. Our home ranges from 3-6 basenjis on average and still no problem, even with dogs that come/go for showing or boarding. The only time I have treated them [my dogs] was prior to traveling to the midwest or east coasts. During the time I lived in Portland, which is at the very northern end of the Valley and has more wind than the lower Valley, I noticed a lot fewer fleas and 'skeeters. I can understand why you haven't experienced them. Try camping on the shores of Fern Ridge sometime. Make sure you take lots of DEET. I grew up there and, man, the 'skeeters are horrible! I can remember our dogs and cats had a rough time of it, too. We were always picking fleas off them. But that's the difference between living in the city and living in the back woods. The conditions in the lower Valley are perfect for the growth of fleas and mosquitos: standing water everywhere and very few hard freezes. (Gramma lives in the "sticks" too and has lots of both in her area outside Salem.) But, again, back to the subject, she used Brewer's Yeast and had pretty good results with it.

You might want to watch her carefully in regard to her food, treats, and whatever she eats when you're not looking. Then change one by one to see if the diarrhea is indeed because of the particular brand of food.

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)

Diana…. I totally agree that we seem to be seeing IBD alot more in our breed again........ And Janet, you should also point her to the Basenji Club of America site www.basenji.org and then she can go to the health section …. read more about health concerns in Basenjis
