Starfish - Help

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Does anyone know if dried starfish are toxic to dogs? My two just knocked over a giant vase on a table far far away and pulled one out and ate him. My vet opens at 8 and any assistance anyone can offer would be appreciated. The web seems to have conflicting information.

    Thanks!

  • I doubt they would be toxic dried…by now you have talked to the vet, I am sure...let us know.

  • Dogs like to eat them especially when it's dry, crunchy and smells like fish. I think it depends on what kind of starfish. National Animal Poison Control 1-888-426-4435.

  • Okay, so just in case anyone else's dogs decide to eat a starfish…

It depends on what kind of starfish. Some supposedly are toxic. Apparently the ones my kids ate are not that big of a deal. I think Miles got most of it. He threw up about a third of it five hours after consuming it. I knew this because Lexi came up to me with a leg that was about and inch and a half sticking out of her mouth. I pulled it out (while she growled at me... she NEVER does this... apparently starfish are like doggie crack) and it was soggy. Gross. Anyway, I found starfish parts and bile all over the kitchen floor and Miles sitting calmly with a "I don't feel good" look on his fuzzy little face. Other than being gassy and vomiting one time, it really did not seem to affect him. Lexi was not affected at all-- My guess is that she did not have a chance to eat any. She's usually the one with a sensitive stomach.

The starfish they ate was not one of those prickly orange ones. It was one of the smooth white ones. I was actually more worried there was some sort of preservative or something on it.

Oh-- And PS-- The National Animal Poison Control will cost you $60 to ask a question. :(

  • Remember, if you catch them pretty close to when they ate something they should not have, you can always use H. Proxide to get them to barf…. works like a charm.... makes a mess and they are very unhappy, but it works.... two to three tables spoons "down the hatch"....

  • Yeh– That is true. But if it was going to be harmless, I didn't want to induce and possibly risk them choking on it. I did take the day off work to monitor them though.

  • Glad everything is ok Bdawg

Hi Sharon Could you try a different dog food? How 'bout some plain non-fat yogurt? I remember giving my Einstein a cooked beef bone (the round ones, shank??) with the marrow in the center…...oh , my poor boy cried......the marrow made it very painful for him to go. I had to limit how much he ate. It was a special treat for him, so he didn't get them often.....that helps the anal glands for sure. Just a couple ideas. Need daily "poop reports" :) Pam "PJ" p.s. you're lucky you can find pumpkin!!!

It does sound like this person's dog is actually eating the bedding, towels, etc. because he/she is worried about the dog getting a blockage. Something that is safe to eat would be better than paper, I think, but I've given Paco Busy Bones and Kongs with treats inside, just to find when I get home that he's totally ignored them. I'll get home, open the crate, and he'll pick up the Bone or Kong and start working on it outside of the crate. I think it's his protest to being left home alone and not getting to come along more than a protest to the crate, as he never minds going in there. To the OP, I wouldn't worry too much about your dog not having bedding - Paco shoves his bedding to one side of the crate and sleeps on the plastic bottom all the time. I don't think they mind too much, as long as they're not in there for long. Have you tried video-ing your dog after you leave, or sneaking back to the house and spying on him? I video'd Paco once and found that he pawed at the corners and sides of the crate for six minutes, then curled up and slept until I came home 4 hours later.

You might want to watch her carefully in regard to her food, treats, and whatever she eats when you're not looking. Then change one by one to see if the diarrhea is indeed because of the particular brand of food.

@tanza: Hmm…. I would "bet not".....gggg;) And you'd win! This morning, Magnum followed me down to the laundry room where I had put some painted-up towels I used last night to get off a lot of the paint when it first happened. Luckily, I was able to grab them up just as he got into position to throw himself down and roll on them. (I trashed them after getting them as clean as I could.) He just loves rolling in stuff that's smelly, whether it's a good smell or a bad smell! He may have learned a lesson, but it's obviously not one that's gonna stop him from rolling in smelly stuff! He seems to be okay even after getting several licks of paint in, no tummy problems, his usual laid-back self. Eating and drinking well.

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)
