Nemo and the Lab houseguest

Basenji Talk

  • We had some houseguests this past weekend and one of them brought his lab, Theo. I caught some pictures of the two of them playing. Nemo's amusement with and tolerance of the rather enthusiastic dog wore off in a few hours. Theo did not understand that sleeping in front of the fireplace was WAY more important than playing! Imagine that.

Nemo is in the process of basically slapping Theo in the face with his paw. The lab is not quite sure what is going on.

And we're off! Still, Theo isn't sure what is going on. (love this picture!)

The lab has caught on and is playing along. This went on for a good 20 minutes.

Not quite obvious in the picture, but Nemo has left Theo in the dust.

  • Great pics! Love the look on the Lab's face when Nemo takes off :D

  • Great photos! I love the first one!

My boyfriend is wanting to get a lab & I keep saying how that breed would be good for Dallas since both breeds are so high energy. Glad to see they got along so great! :)

  • I love it when then the b's do the basenji 500 in the house. My 2 bounce off the couch when they run.

My B does the same exact thing. I'm glad I trim his nails otherwise i'd be replacing my couch. :D

  • Wooohoooo!!! Looks like they were having fun!:D:D:D Love the pics!

  • Terrific pictures. They really look like they enjoy one another!

  • When my B, Sahara does the B-500 she bounces off the couch in the den and living room, she is such a bouncer. Sometimes she hits the back of my couch in the den so hard I think it might turn over, probably would have by now but it is against the wall. She is so funny when she does this, and when we say, "Ok, Sahara rest now and go get water", she immediately stops and does what we say, she is something else.

  • Great pictures - thanks for sharing.

  • Love the pics, how sweet!!

My mum breeds labs (she had 6!!!) and i have one living with me and i have to say, Maya and Chloe the lab get on GREAT. Chloe is an older girl (she just turned 8) and she's had pups, so she doesnt take any messing from Maya, puts her in her place when she gets a bit cheeky :D But she loves playing with Maya too, she is teaching her to walk on a lead nicely at the moment lol. Labs are great companions for any dog i think, their temperments are just amazing.

  • Looks like they had a blast!

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

Ah ok cool thanks, I had something like that when Safi was smaller and it was the most successful for sure. She outgrew it quite quickly though

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

My best friend's 2 German shepherds both sit in my lap when I go visit at their house. Not exactly a comfortable sit for me, but I love the dogs so I usually let them stay that way until I can't take the weight anymore. Seems to be a case of big dogs don't know they are big - small dogs don't know they are small. :)

The neighbors boxer was not so much aggressive with Cali as she was with my brothers boxer. Cali usally plays with their German Shepherd pup and they get along really well. True, I shouldnt have taken Lady anywhere near their boxer, but I thought they would get along because their boxer gets along with the other boxer down the street.. My brother also has a Cane Corso(Italian Mastiff) and a Rottweiler and his Boxer is used to playing with them all of the time because they live together. When I say discipline I mean more of a "time out" in the crate or a stern NO! Sometimes if I clap my hands once and say NO! at the same time she gets the message. I have had her 2 months now and we are both making progress. I am learning what worked for my other dogs does not necessarily work for Cali. I do notice that training her is a lot different from my previous 2 dogs (Pitbull/Rottweiler mix and a German Shepherd). I have been reading a lot of the posts about obedience and training on the forum and it has helped a lot. Cali is like no other dog that I have owned, but I like being challenged.:) :) :)
