Shedding?

    My 3 yr old female started shedding after suddenly developing a thicker white undercoat. We live in Maine and have had her for 2 years but she didn't shed the first year. Should I be concerned? Or just get a good brush? Zoom Groom is OK but not great. Also any thoughts on raw/ freeze dried food diet? She has been on it and digestion & appetite is way better, but heard it may affect her coat...

    My (6 yo spayed female) developed an undercoat around the same age. A good brush (outside) helps. Diet, in my experience, has little to do with the intensity of the shed.

    I've noticed that my brindle and my black white and tan basenji both developed thick undercoats in winter but my two red and white B's did not, though I'm not sure why that was.

    @Mildred-Mayhem I don't think climate is the cause (as I am in the Southern U.S.). Nor do I think that it is related to foods. So, I'm wondering if the undercoat is directly related to age. Is there a big age difference among your B's?

    @veriwags How long did your basenji shed for? Our 18 month tri color basenji has never shed before. However, she is starting to shed immensely. Her black coat is turning white with a distinct black stripe down her back. Just hoping her new coat comes in as dark and does dissolve her color.

    We have exactly the same situation with our tricolor girl, @basenjilovers. We were told, that the coat might changed after spaying and she did develop some undercoat around her neck, but she is now losing a lot of hair (like never before), which I contributed to extremely hot summer here (Europe).

    Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

    Have you considered feeding raw food (meat and vegetables)? It worked wonders for our B's coat and overall health.

    Tommy I have a similar brush and that is probably the best one I have found to remove hair and he enjoys the massage it gives, at least his hair is heavy enough to stay on the ground not like the Cornish rex we have, his hair is like dust it get's everywhere, don't need extra fibre in our food during shedding time, I'm sure we must ingest an amount YUCK!!, should of got a Sphinx cat and a Mexican hairless dog.     Thanks everyone for all of the helpful information! We did go and visit someone with a Basenji shorly after I had first posted this question. My son and husband played with the dog and hugged it and it licked them. We stayed for a while. no issues! we are expecting our new Basenji to arrive around the middle of this month. very excited!

    My first question is why are you bathing her every two weeks? Is she roling in manure or something else with a nasty stench? I have 4 basenjis in my house. Two that are going on 2 years old: One bitch was shown in early July… she was bathed that weekend. One bitch was shown back in March.... she was bathed in late March. The two 5 month old pups were bathed in mid-August for the first time. I don't have grass in my yard.. just pine trees and weeds and wood chips... which means they are in dirt all the time. I wipe them down with a hot wet towel when they come in... but that is it. I must preface this with the fact that I HATE DUST AND DIRT of any nature to touch me. If they were dusty, I would wipe them down. But bathing them every two weeks? HECK NO. That is why I have basenjis... I am not a groomer, and hate dealing with grooming... bathe for shows, and very little else. And my dogs are CLEAN to the touch.... Perhaps you should bathe them a bit less often and use a super good scrubber to scratch out the dead hair… that should be enough I'd think.... of course, I am coming from the point that I don't have dogs that get an undercoat... so perhaps it is quite different. Please don't take offense at what I suggest... I just can't imagine having to bathe a basenji that often.

    @elena86: Sometimes, Senji could just be laying on the floor for a few minutes and when he stands up, there's a pile of fur laying on the carpet. I've had to wash his blankets every day. I could probably knit a sweater with all the fur that gets caught in the dryer's lint filter. :rolleyes: Same here with Timbo thought at first he had a skin problem, it is too cold to change his winter coat too his summer coat :rolleyes:

    Hi Quercus! Tano's breeder was Maripat Webber of Etukon. I believe both her siblings went on to be show dogs. Tano took after her mom as far as coloring…being the only red and white of the litter. ^_^ I'll push up Tano's appointment for her physical and request the full thyroid thing. If this is all related to thyroid I definitely want to get it looked into asap! Thank you for pointing out that it could all be related! She really develops a thick woolly undercoat in the fall/winter. You'd think the house wasn't near 70 degrees all winter! If her hair was a little longer I could possibly clean it up and felt with it--she sheds that much! :D
