Car crate or booster seat?

Basenji Talk

  • I have a 14 week old female. I have a couple 30" crates at home, but looking to purchase one for the car. Does the travel car crate need to be the same size? Any brand recommended? Do they come with dividers so I don't have to keep buying crates as she grows?

Also, has anyone used a doggie car seat for a basenji?

  • I've been using a car seat in mine but she will not settle in it at all, she will perch, stand inside, stand outside (even though she's anchored to it) and do every other combination aside from sit or lie down nicely. I've been through 3 different seats and they've all had the same effect. When she was smaller I got one which was like a box which was raised and that was probably the most successful one but she grew too big for it quickly.

  • I used the same size crate for a puppy as I do for an adult with a bit more bedding material. Your breeder should be able to advise you but if not, go to a dog show where you can talk to breeders as well as see the types of crates they recommend you use.

  • So I ended up trying a booster seat after all. The pet store told me they would give me a refund even if the puppy chewed it up. The puppy loves her her booster seat! She mostly just curls up and naps, sometimes she sits up to look out the window. When we put her metal crate in the car, it kept rattling, making noise. She was nervous and crying. So the booster seat was the solution for us.

  • What does it look like?

I purchased it at Petco. She's tethered to it and she can sit up or lie down. She lies down after a few minutes and falls asleep.

  • Ah ok cool thanks, I had something like that when Safi was smaller and it was the most successful for sure. She outgrew it quite quickly though

Interestingly enough, there has recently been a discussion about crates on the CleanRun list. CR is working on obtaining some high end crates to sell. Everything CR sells is tested by the CR staff. I am not sure how they are going to crash test these crates, but I am anxious to see them. I have a feeling they may be the solid metal (Al?) crates I've seen that are VERY expensive, but we'll seel I have used Kennel Aire crates in my van for years. Why Kennel Aire? http://www.newworldbasenjis.net/kennelaire.htm I also like that the KA crates have one inch squares. That makes it harder to suck things into the crate. @tanza: The problem being the Basenji that chews through the seat belt harness in 30seconds or less. So hence the muzzle Yep, I happen to know for a fact that one of the most expensive things on a 73 VW bug is the seatbelt! For those having problems with getting your dog in a crate, I believe Susan Garrett's Crate Games talks about that. I think it's at the end of the dvd.

Indy has a "Large" size wire crate from walmart. We decked it out with a king size comforter, two fleece blankets, and a life size "puppy" stuffed animal. Then we throw in a deer antler and two of his favorite stuffed toys and tell him to have at it. So far no problems. The other cool thing about this crate is that dh made him a "deck" ontop. We put the kennel next to the couch so he can climb up the top and onto the deck. He hangs out there and looks out the window all day long sometimes. When he was younger we put the divider in, but once he showed us that he knew pottying in his crate was not ok we just let him have all the room. So far so good.

Thanks, that is a good idea. She has a comfy bed and lots of blankets. Althogh as I have said before when she gets out of the crate everything has to come out with her. I will try setting everything up in the big crate and leave the door open. Thanks!!

I use a car harness with My isZi because if I don't she wants to sit on my shoulders and it makes it very hard to drive. I have no idea why she wants on my shoulders even if I'm sitting at the desk on the computer she thinks she has to be on my shoulders. I guess because her ancestor's were carried that way?
