Forget the tomato juice, it just turns the white pink and it still smells. The dish soap/peroxide/baking soda works the best but it will still be a day or two until the smell is gone -more if the spray was heavy. Our kids used to get fairly regularly skunked because the skunks would come up to the fence at night and the Bs couldn't resist poking their paws through at the skunks!! Fortunately, we actually seem to have fewer skunks here in TX than we did in CA - or at least there's more 'wild' area so they don't come to the yard as much. Terry

I wish they could go everywhere with me but I couldn't imagine trying to get them on a plane. We are going to lake Erie in a couple week for a long weekend and they are coming with us. This campground is very dog friendly, this is the campground's annual halloween party before shutting down for the winter. Everyone is asking us to bring our dogs and of course they will be dressed up in costumes. After that we are taking a week to go to Cancun. Dog's can't go but will staying with a friend that has 1 acre fenced and her 3 dogs and mine were practically raised together. So we call it a sleepover. Everyone plays until exhaused so not a lot of time to get into trouble. I will miss them while I'm gone but know they are in great hands with my friend.

I totally agree with pat - your vet needs to test a sample of Basil's urine before he can determine a problem.

I've always had undigested items just passing through - makes the poop interesting but no ill effects.

when i first got malinois #2, she was down on her pasterns and was about 10-12 months old. I gave her some joint supplements with vit C in them. That combined with good exercise helped. Do you have pic of your boy in a show stack?

We now have everything put up where he can't reach anything. He is such a joy to be around and makes us laugh with his antics. :)

Yeah, after the first two, breed and group I was starting to think we had a chance, I thought , if he keeps this up…... But of course.. It was funny, he just would not stand still , I kept having to get up and do a turn and return to position and he would be ok and then just when the judge was passing by.... Again..... Of course it didn't help that it was on grass, and there were ants! They kept biting his legs and he kept jumping up and I had to take them off of him and move to avoid them... It was horrible. There are always ants Herr when its on grass!!!!

Yeah, i dont really understand the primitive category… Most dogs are grouped by their characteristics or abilities, what they were bred to do, .. Primitive just groups them by history, how old the breed is?... They are grouped with podencos and cirneccos which makes sense, but then also with huskies and malamutes and Pomeranians. the result for me is that instead of competing with the whippets and Italian greyhounds I compete with the spitz and Pomeranians, that makes no sense to me...

Tana could seemingly care less about noises, nothing seems to bother her, not even a shotgun being fired about 50 feet away a couple weeks ago. She was more interested in wanting the varmint two of my other dogs had put up a tree- which is what I was shooting at ;) As skittish as she was when we adopted her from BRAT (she was a puppymill dog) she really has turned out to be very laid back about a lot of situations :) Jibini on the other hand, is weird. As a pup he didn't seem bothered by much- growing up in Florida he was accustomed to thunderstorms but when he was 6 or 7 he suddenly started getting a bit nervous/agitated by the sound of thunder….mostly pacing and whining. And now at age 11 he's not nearly as bothered by them as he was a couple years ago; he may whine and pace for a few minutes but is usually content to snuggle under a blanket and sleep it out. Fireworks definitely bother him and that started a couple years before the thunder anxiety. He isn't thrilled about gunfire either. But other loud noises don't bother him- when I drove a truck he was exposed to a lot of noisy situations- I could walk him through a busy truck shop and not even an impact wrench going off 10 feet behind him made him flinch. I guess some dogs are pretty selective about which noises they'll react to- I know I've seen hunting dogs who were scared to death of thunder and certain other types of loud noises, but absolutely steady to gunfire.

After a long time I've learnt to trust my Basenjis (but not I should add all my dogs). They also spend some time in digging for roots which I always assume are for medicinal purposes as the oldest part of our house has the remains of an ancient herbal garden. Our sheep also do the same!

Not quite on topic, but if you ever experience problems with your dog's digestion just after opening a new bag of dry food, be suspicious. It is definitely possible to get a "bad" bag of food. If you have multiple dogs, this problem is easier to be aware of. A friend got blindsided when a new shipment of feed for her goats pretty much wiped out the whole herd because of a mistake in formulation. This can happen with dog food too!! It is one of the first questions an astute vet will ask with an unexplained digestive upset.

Well put Lisa, thanks for the reminder. In the end, for members of BCOA regardless if you are a breeder, someone that shows or does performance events, or just has the most important family companion… you are important to the breed. Make your voice heard and vote! All Basenji owners should be part of the BCOA, as it is your club, your breed. You make the difference and the people that serve on the Board are your voice. Just so everyone knows, I am not running, but I have strong feelings for the people that would best serve the Breed and the Club. We have some very good people that have thrown their hats in the ring and would be a wonderful addition to the Basenji Club of America

Frozen food is very good. I usually give my dogs raw bones/marrow bones and meat with bones that I find cheap. Turkey necks are also very good for keeping them pups busy for a while. I'm kinda scared to give my dogs toys alone, especially in a crate where they can easily get very bored. Chew and eat a rubber toy, isn't good for a dog stomach. You can get the same problem with bones too, but they are probably easier to digest, than rubber/plastic. And remember, always feed RAW bones, never cooked! Cooked bones splinter easily, and can tear up a stomach … good to remember. :)

As a reference when we brought C-Me, Franie, and Trip home… that was three baby puppies (9 and 11 weeks) that we had to take out of their carrier, ggggg... and it was exciting to say the lest. But we did just fine!!! I do remember one time that when I was flying from NY to SFO, there was a person with a cat in a carrier that was not concerned at all that the cat was going to go through the xray... I did tell her that she needed to remove the cat, her response was "why"... my answer.. "and would you go through that?"

Spencer had one of his anal glands impacted when he was just under a year old, and ever since, I keep an eye out for swelling, scooting, licking or tail biting. It's usually obvious when he's having issues. Except… I took him to the vet last week because I thought he might have an eye infection. I always have his anals expressed while I'm there and was shocked when the vet tech said he had an infection in one of them. I had seen no signs at all! So now he's on antibiotics for ten days, then back we go for a re-check. Glad to hear Oakley is doing well. He's a handsome boy!

I really believe this helps. Uzie does have separation anxiety and just about 10 min before I leave, I put on a station from Directv that has easy listening. I enjoy it when I am home and do notice that all three of my pups do seem to settle down on their beds and enjoy it! I thank you for posting the link, my girlfriend needs this for her aging Silky who gets so worked up during a storm that he defecates all through the house…..

Poor Cody! It was hard on Spencer (and me!) when we moved cross-country. At first, he would go and sit by the front door, waiting for someone to take him "home." I bought him new toys to play with and he would carry them to the door, sit beside them and wait. It took a few weeks, but he settled in. He still gets anxious when I bring in boxes, though.
