@ChaseandZahrasmom: I just have to comment on what a beautiful website this is! Yeah - the folks in this group are wonderful and supportive for the Basenji breed. We adopted Daisy from them. Did anyone see how beautiful the B's are? They still need homes.

Its very hard not to be judgemental, but when I deal with folks rehoming their dogs, I do try to be kind. At least until I get the dog out of the home. Then I vent to my dog rescue friends. Sometimes, you just have to.

Unfortunately, too many people read what I call "puppy mill propaganda" such as barkless, non shedding, no odor, hypoallergenic, etc and run out and get a Basenji. More often than not these uneducated buyers discover that their "perfect dog" is a royal pain in the butt. Some people will stick it out but many will not and those dogs end up homeless. Some dogs end up homeless because the owners are having,or have recently had, a baby. Both human babies and Basenjis take alot of time and energy and many people just can't handle it. Out goes the Basenji.

Sigh. I also have issues with folks making a choice that is good for them and not for their animals. I have been through a divorce and had pets. Lived in a pretty crummy place for a year, but at least the pets came with me. Some folks don't make that committment. I am glad we have the rescue support groups we now have in place. It saves so many animals and give folks a chance to start again

That's Gunner. I contacted his people several weeks ago to inquire and he is not in a kill shelter. He's in a rescue program (not through BRAT) and he "does not need rescuing from a rescue". Just an FYI…

@drummamamma: My other dog ate my sons retainer twice. There must be something delicious about the inside of his humans mouth to a dog! Yuck! ha ha They like it because it's expensive. Vegas

@twiddles: do you know where I can find a basenji to just have as a pet then? I just wanted to breed her to have a puppy, I wanted to keep ALL of here puppies, even if she has like 3 or 6 I love Basenjis and want good for them but I would like to have one of hers, or have one of another dogs…I just like the breed! Twiddles, there are many good breeders on this site and more to be found doing some research. Plan your next Basenji, even if you have to wait a year or longer, and drive many miles to get one. Your wait and effort will be rewarded with a quality dog that you will be happy with and be very proud of. BRAT is also another option to go, so many good dogs are in need of a good loving home.
