Basenjis For Sale or Wanted

@jonny: HAnsel ran right up to Riley and said " heellllooooo" . It surprised us both so much we just stared at each other and laughed. When my son told his dad, he just kinda when " huh". Tonite HAnsel said helloo to my husband. Blew him away. Doesn't surprise me a bit. He was always encouraged when he spoke, and he can get some pretty cool sounds. He usually yawns in the morning too. He will also do the yawn if he doesn't want to do something you tell him to do, but will do it anyway. Just his interesting way, I guess. I am glad you are getting to see his personality. Has your husband taken him for a ride yet? It was the way I always could bring him into stores, so he ended up loving it. I got it from seeing some photos of Africans carrying their b's like that. @bellabasenji: It all boils down to what is better for the (so called)"breeders" wallets!!!:mad: UUuuugh… BYB's & millers!!!:mad: That is true, a pure for profit breeder is not going to spend money on health testing that is going to cut into their bottom line. They will do as little testing as they can do and still sell puppies. Educating as many people as possible to demand health testing for both parents is the best thing that we can do for the breed. There will always be some who want a puppy "right now" and won't care but the more people we can educate the smaller the market for puppy mill dogs because really most people do want to do the right thing and want a healthy puppy that will be a long lived companion.

Actually in Indiana - Baruh had an litter that I believe still has some puppies available. Linda is not online so if you email her you won't get far. If someone wants pictures contact me and I can send you pictures of who is available.

Please make sure the puppies you sell are clear of fanconis. Its an awfull illness and no one wants to have a sick dog.

I would look at the BCOA site for reputable breeders in your area, but don't be quick to rule out others. A lot of good breeders have all their puppies spoken for by now, so that will make your search much harder. But keep looking and don't be afraid to contact folks from all over. The most important thing is to find a good breeder that you can work with personally, and one who does significant health testing, including the new DNA marker for fanconi. A happy healthy puppy and supportive relationship with a breeder are priceless! I do know some folks will ship, but the best thing to do is go out and get the dog. You will probably want to meet the breeder and litter, and they will want to meet you. That way you can get a better feel for each other and both still have an "out" if things don't seem right. For about the same price as shipping a dog, you can get a plane ticket yourself to get them. It usually only costs about $50 or so to add the dog in cabin on your return trip. And then you are in complete control the whole time of what is happening to your puppy. Also sometimes breeders that live outside your area still have ways to make transportation arrangements. You can always check. They know other breeders that live between you two and can meet up with them at shows or events to get the puppy closer to it's new home, or within a reasonable driving distance of you. My first dog came from Georgia, but I only had to go to KY to get him. :)

We have been blessed with a bit of a miracle thanks to ALL of your help!! We will be getting a Basenji this season from a Local CT breeder and yes avid tester AMAZING litter!!! (the original breeder we were working with)! Just waiting for the details to come thru!! Yes, if you want a rescue basenji you really need to be on top of it every day. They go fast, and unfortunately not always to educated homes. The effort is well worth it, though, both in getting a wonderful pup (who may need to work through some issues so you can both be reminded he's wonderful) and in the satisfaction of giving a basenji who's been misunderstood a wonerful forever home. Hang in there. Your pup will find you.

@MacPack: I can assure you that Robyn's dogs are wonderful! We drove to Atlanta and back (in one day) to get our BRAT girl Nicky when she coordinated our adoption. It's a long day, but well worth it to get a great dog from a wonderful breeder. And gas is just a little over $2 a gallon! Good luck to you, the right dog will find it's way to you.
