Making my Basenji's food better…
Hi all. I wanted to post a thread to let other owners know what I stumbled upon.
My Basenji, Jacob, is not very food motivated. We've had him 6 weeks. A few weeks ago I noticed his skin is very dry. I started squeezing 2 Flaxseed Oil pills into his food. When I went to the vet, she said that I was doing the right thing but that it may take 6-8 weeks. She said it's good to start correcting the problem from the inside. Well, 4 weeks later and still no real results. His skin is still dry, but back to Jacob not being food motivated. I put his food out and he only eats half of it and isn't very excited about his food. For the record, I feed him 2wice a day, Farm Stand Selects.
I started to do some research. I wondered if I should change his food to get him more excited. I started to research online and read that dry food alone doesn't contain much moisture but contains way more protein than wet food. While wet food contains more moisture but not as much protein. So I started mixing in Nature's Recipe Healthy Skin Venison & Rice wet food (25%) into his dry food (75%). The results have been GREAT! He loves his food now and eats in right away. He finishes it in one sitting! It's only been a few days so I'm not sure if it will help out with the dry skin yet, but my fingers are crossed.
Anyway, I just wanted to let people know what I learned. If you already know this then cool.

Separation anxiety
We have rescued a male basenji - Jacob 5 weeks ago. He is very very timid and scared. At first we had no problems with the crate - it was almost a safe place for him as he was afraid of us. Now he refuses to go in the crate. In fact he has chewed off the wire bars trying to escape. We are so afraid he will hurt himself that we are trying to let him stay on the first floor. Everytime we leave he poops, pees and gets so wound up. He chews his fur off his back and is incredibly anxious. Another issue, which I think may be separate, is Jacob will only go to my husband now and is afraid of and shows NO respect to me. We love this dog and need help!!!

RE: Wanted Basenji in Pennsylvania
Well it's official. Thanks to BRAT I finally got a Basenji. His name is Jacob and he's about 2.5 years old. I love him so much. We got him on Saturday and he was so scared and timid. He is starting to warm up and come out of his shell. My wife and I are really thrilled that Jacob is now part of our family. Thanks to everyone who has responded to this thread.

RE: Wanted Basenji in Pennsylvania
Hi. I got my BRAT letter. So I guess I'm just waiting now to see if they have any dogs for me. Still looking on Petfinder and trying to reach out to shelters. Some people that I've reached out to in the D.C. area said they don't place dogs outside the area.
If you come across anything, please let me know. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks gain.
Sincerely,
Brian Moore

RE: Wanted Basenji in Pennsylvania
Thank you very much. BRAT has been sending me Basenji mixes and I'm a little leary because I am allergic to most breeds. I'd really like a pure breed or Basenji/Chihuahua mix. I've checked out Petfinder and I've contacted a few shelters in Virginia but they only work with people in that area.
I would love to help you out and rescue a Basenji. I will keep looking on the BRAT website. Wish me luck.
Sincerely,
Brian Moore

Wanted Basenji in Pennsylvania
Hi all! I'm new to this. My name is Brian Moore. My wife and I are looking to adopt a dog and are doing our fair share of research. We've settled on a Basenji. We have 2 Basenji's where I work and I love them. I've filled out the adoption paperwork on the BRAT site and am waiting for them to get back to me. So far they've sent me Basenji mixes. I'd really like a full breed Basenji or at least a Basenji/Chihuahua mix as I am allergic to most other breeds.
Can anyone help me out? The perfect timing for me would to get a Basenji the week of Thanksgiving - Nov 22ndish. I plan on taking the dog to work a few days a week but I'd like to spend a full week at home with him/her before that.
Please let me know what you all think or if anyone can help.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Brian Moore
