I have a 5yo BRAT boy that I am working on crate training. He would "explode" and freak out when I would try it. I then got a carrier (more den like than the wire crate) and put it in his "room". The first week, I left the door open. Then I started giving him treats by it, then inside it. Now, the only place he gets the "high value" treats is in his crate. I have left him in there for a little bit and he didnt "explode"- so it is slowly working. But with our older B's it takes more time. Get a soft bed or comfy blanket for it and some great treats (turkey, cheese, something really good) and only let her have them in there. good luck

@Kebasmom: Can anyone out there recommend a place to get a good price on quality folding crates and exercise pens? Thanks. http://www.omahavaccine.com/ Omaha Vaccine.. many times you can get shipping for free depending on the size of your order… and I like the General Cage for crates... and if you want a great crate pad or just a pad in general, look at the Bully Pads.... they are great and last like crazy.... and wash really easy... I use them especially for whelping... turned Lisa onto the too... even her "ripper" has a hard time destroying them.

Oh that is good idea. I was thinking of getting one of those dual leads for two dogs and using one clip on her martingale and on the harness. She is a sneaky little wench!

@Mia: I tried an online seach for lure coursing in Orlando but nothing. The closest one is about an hour away, actually ASFA only cites 3 in the whole state of Florida! If anyone can give me advice on how to find a club and get my puppy running that would be great. Thanks If they are not listed with ASFA or not AKC ( and I check AKC site and looks like only one club in AKC does coursing in FLA, Sunshine State Coursing Club of Central Florida) most likely you will not find one any closer. You might try NOTRA (oval track and see if any in FLA) but usually the same clubs that course do NOTRA. Also you might contact the club in Fla and ask them..

Deke was litter box trained as a pup. I to did away with it, he doesn't have any weather issues. I still have it. Mybe I should try it for my new princess. Gracie will not go if its wet. I've cleaned up poop three times from her. She does pee outside…..I think...I haven't found any wet spots. We used that litter like yesterday's news. He pretty much stopped using it on his own he preferred outside but would use it from time to time.

@Tayda_Lenny: Yes! There's one this weekend in North Branch…. are you going to go? Would be great if we could meet up and help each other through it. http://www.iwags.org/coursing.html I'm going to call the people and find out how to enter them… If you B has never run, then you need to do practice first… and if ASFA Trial they need to be certified and AKC then need a JC certificate before they can run. Some ASFA trials have "singles" that you can enter in and they run by themselved. Also even if your B has run before, but not with you as handler, I would still suggest that you go, see what a trial is all about etc... and just do practice until you are comfortable that you can catch your B at the end of the course

@Tayda_Lenny: Lenny actually escaped from a fenced yard yesteday for the first time… scared me to DEATH. Once when I first got him ( he was about 15 weeks old) we were outside w/ leashes and the clip on his collar snapped and he was free. Instead of running after him, I got his attention (miracle) and ran as fast as I could away from him and into the house. He thought I was playing and chased after me. I did the same thing yesterday. He was out of the fence and running around sniffing things and when I got his attention (from about 100 feet away, I did a sort of "human play bow" and then sprinted into the yard. Luckily he chased after me. (Beat me into the yard too... the little monster) . WHEW! and then my heart started beating again. Anyway, just wanted to share that technique. It has worked for me the 2 times I've needed it. Get their attention, and then run in the other direction... I did the same thing with Ruby, the one time she got free when I was walking her and I fell. Worked like a charm :D. It always feels good to outsmart her :D.

The bill was pulled from the Senate before a vote in July because it most likely would have been defeated at that time. It will be reintroduced in January with "revisions". The people who are behind this bill have an ultimate goal of eliminating all pet ownership in this country. They do not want to work with breeders and are unwilling to look at studies that recommend a course of action in line with what responsible breeders have been saying and doing all along, education of perspective buyer with life long support to help owners through the challenges of dog ownership. http://www.petpopulation.org/reasonsfor.pdf This bill also will not effect the major source of impulse bought animals, out of state puppy mills that supply pet stores and out of state internet retailers who sell to anyone willing to submit payment. It is also seems to ignore how many of the dogs that come into shelter do so without vaccinations, without ID of any kind, and no identifiable owner. If people are unwilling to spend $5-10 for low cost vaccinations and a simple tag ID, there is no way they are going to spend 10 times that amount to spay/neuter their pet. The only thing this bill would accomplish is to make responsible breeders criminals. It will have no effect on the people who are already breaking local laws.

On the show after Macy's T-day parade they had a Basenji in the hounds group but didn't show it except on the initial pass-through. I don't think the judge liked that particular cut of dog - there was a similar-looking Pharoah's Hound and one other 'senji-like dog in the group - none of which were picked.

I'm going to see how Charlie does on walks for now. He really doesn't pull much, but he is still getting used to everything around my neighborhood. I'm also going to be taking him to behavior classes soon. If he gives me a problem when he's bigger, I do plan on trying a gentle leader. I've already decided to get one for my lab/ hound mix, Bandit. He practically dislocates your arm because of the pulling.

I wanna do lure coursing with Hollie!!! Unfortunately the closest place to us that participates in 2 hours away. :( I have even tried e-mailing greyhound rescue groups in my area and get no answer from anyone in their organization. This makes me wonder if they respond to people e-mails regarding adoption of one of their dogs??
