He is still in bed with us  We will be asking the traininer on Friday when we take him to class & see if she has any input. I just don't understand why it seems like a switch was flipped all of a sudden and he's so psychotic in his crate now, after he'd been very good for several weeks. He's definately manipulated us! (which makes me even more frustrated because I'm a psychologist and I know all about behavior modification and avoiding manipulation with people…but my own dog is getting my goat). LOL. My bf and I joke that its a darn good thing that Jackpot is cute, cuz he gets away with a lot more because of his basenji wrinkles. Oh, BTW...we heard his yodel for the first time yesterday...melted my heart. ;)

Charlie is really cute! Glad for you to get the crate issue in check. It is a real training challenge for about everyone I suppose. Lucky pup going to doggy daycare. It must be super fun for Charlie. :)

I know that in the Fall and Winter they do LGRA and NOTRA in Brea and Orange. I am not sure about all the places that they course but you can check http://www.asfa.org and http://www.akc.org for their calendars.

Mirtillo isn't allowed off leash either. Only when I'm sure there is no traffic within a radius of 10 km.. When we go to such places I ask other dogowners if their dogs listen well and if it's ok that I let Mirtillo off leash. When Mirtillo doesn't listen.. the other dogs will and I can 'catch' him. It occasionally happens that his leash slips through my fingers, but when I call him then, he always returns immediatly. (knowing I'm having some very yummy treats)

I have been a bit of chicken about entering a competition. I think I am going to give one a try either this May or June. I am going to start in CPE because their level 1 should be a good place for me the novice handler and Rio my novice dog.

If I tried to pick up Sam and carry him away from a fight he would have a go at me. When he is worked up and I've tried to get him away he has bitten me. In every other respect he is a wonderful dog whom I love v much. I find it interesting that I haven't come across any other basenjis in this forum as aggressive as mine. Sam doesn't just growl or snap at other male dogs he actively pushes them and tries to goad them into fighting. I'm beginning to think that Sam is a particularly 'rambunctious' pup?

I do something similar to that, Quercus. It is almost like a game. I take a small piece of a treat and make him sit next to the door. Then, when I am ready to go, I toss it across the room and he goes running after it. By the time he finds and eats it, I am gone. Of course, I am in the same stages of leaving him for short periods (no more than 15 minutes- very beginning) and seeing how he does with not tearing the house completely apart.

I didnt know that is what an xpen was. I just bought one on ebay yesterday. total for shipping and all was around $58-$60. I just did the "buy it now" thing. I searched for "dog play pens", didnt know they had a real name. It was a "midwest" also.

@mauigirl: I assume it was the latter situation..On the premium for that day there was only one JC box to check. Oh well…..a practice run. Still stoked that she followed it in such tall grass. In that case, they are correct… unless they got two JC tests approved with AKC... you can only run and get one leg of the JC... but your right... practice is good...

Hi I just started mica on Rally I- we are into the second week - we are learning left turn - right turn - front - weave between cones and it is alot of fun. I did not use clicker training before this dog training class but mica catches on very easily - after I took a private class with her on clicker training. I also found out you can do rally I with non-akc dogs also for competition which makes me happy, too. Mica likes to be sociable with all the other dogs (only three others) at the class - so sometimes she wants to say hello hello to everyone, including the trainer. But when she concentrates, she does quite well. It takes work and practice. The only thing is the dog school seems too serious, sometimes, but since I want to work with her, I will work through this class. BaMicas mom

Haha, jah, nooit geschoten, is altijd mis ;) Today we had Mirtillo walking loose, but with his leach still attach to his collar. This worked very well. When he doesn't feel like coming, we just run away from him and then he thinks it's a game and follows. I hope we will find a fenced place like that. It sounds great. May I ask you from which breeder you got Gaia?

@tanza: Do you use a wire crate? I have always used General Cage Crates.. and they have lasted for many, many years… I have ones that are 16 yrs old that are just in great condition. http://www.generalcage.com/Shopping/default.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1 We use wire crates too. The tray in the bottom locks so they can't push it out and its hard to destroy :D

Love it. I had seen the golden video a couple years ago and though. well of course a golden would be willing to learn that. Amazing that a Basenji actually decided it was worth while to learn that :)
