Basenji Training

I've run into similar situations with the kids in the neighborhood. When they saw me walking my previous beastie, they would come running. I always told the kids to stop and let my dog smell their hand so he could tell if they were good or bad ("oh I'm a good girl" :)) and the kids surprisingly obeyed. Now when they see me with EL D they remember and do the right thing. And sometimes I hear them telling their sibling or friend "let EL D smell you first".

That was always a problem when I had to leave my previous beastie while I was out of town. It was tough to ask others to follow our exact schedule (so I tried not to), especially morning potty. I would always take an extra day or two when I got back to try and get things back to our normal. I haven't had EL D long enough to know how he'll react to my leaving for a few days - although it didn't take much time to acclimate when I first acquired him anyway.

@Tayda_Lenny: Also, perhaps a squirt bottle hanging from your hip at all times will help! The one time I tried the squirt bottle on Ruby it scared her, and she immediately jumped down, ran to the rug near the dinner table and peed :eek:. The squirt bottle has been put away never to be seen again.

And I agree, one of my puppy owners and now a co-owner of Kobey… has put a CD and RN on her first bitch that she got from me... and leg 1 of her RA in Rally (from the Nationals)... I totally respect her and what she has done... it is the home to "die" for... IMO.... me on the other hand is the typical Basenji person... NO I am not obedient!

@tanza: Yes, I agree with people guarding.. if mine do that, they are "dumped" on the floor… it is NOT acceptable behavior... gggg But like Andrea, I don't think that the behavior will really change.... but they get the message if they land on the floor! Unfortunately, like Jazzysmom mentioned, I have found with my worst guarders, as soon as they perceive they are about to get dumped, or worse, grabbed, the guarding increases and they will launch and attack the other dog. So I have stopped doing that; depending on the individual, dumping works fine for some of my less serious guarders (Bella and Luna). If the dog is sitting on/near me, I will place my hand inbetween the dogs, and quietly say 'no, Ariel, no…quiet'....if she stops, I keep cuddling, if she doesn't I place her in her crate, and we do a dog rotation ;) If she isn't sitting near a person, but is guarding something else, that is an immediate 'into the crate'. This has worked pretty well with both Ivy and Ariel...I can say 'no...quiet' and they usually calm down. I dunno...I am still trying to find a suitable fix for this problem that is easier than having to hop up every thirty seconds ;)

I was thiking of getting my pup into agility since she loves to run like the wind, maybe lure coursing too. How old would be the perfect age?

I agree i´ve used those methods on all my dog´s(long before Cesar came along) not only the basenji and never has a dog questioned my leadership.But I always praise and i´ve never used force never had the need for it so there i´m different.These methods are common methods with working dog´s I used to have a Boxer and i´ve just adjusted certain parts of it to fit the Basenji ;) Many of the dog´s in that show are just left to "run wild" no training or excercise and instead lot´s of silly things with people who humanize their dog´s.And they looked surprised if they need to take walks jeez I take mine out 4-5 times a day and two of the walks are 6 miles and he he plays with other dog´s every single day to keep him socialized as he´s growing into adulthood.I also show train him every day not more then 10-15 minutes just to keep it fresh in his mind. What people tend to forget obedience training is something that you have to keep doing continuously as their memory is not like ours so you have to keep it fresh in the mind. I probably stated the obvious but I do agree with Jazzys mum:)

I have a doggie door and we love it, not to mention my Basenji, Sahara. I also have underground electric fence, so that keeps her in the yard. I leave it open most of the time, but I have had to close it when I didn't want her to go outside. I have not had any trouble with other animals coming, I live just outside the city limits, and my town is small, not many wild animals near me. It has been really warm here in NC so I have not closed it at night, but when cold weather comes I will close it. Sahara goes out by herself when she has to potty during the day, but most of the time I take her out at night on her leash. She does not like the darkness by herself, silly girl. haha!!!! By the way I never use the crate anymore, she is free to go since I got the fencing.

my mom and dad were alwasy taking in strays - dogs cats whatever. One cat they had was quite feral and my mom had feather dusters in several places. When the cat would pounce on one of the dogs or the other cat - she got a face full of feather duster. It was interesting to see and labor intensive - but it did work to break up fights without yelling. Sort of a redirection of thought.

But then I recommend that all be muzzled when running. I never used to.. but over the years of coursing have totally changed my mind. But not because dogs might be nasty… If you start out your dogs with a muzzle, they begin to associate the muzzle with coursing and know when that goes on they are going to "chase" the bunny. I would prefer that it was "required" for all hounds to run muzzled like it is for Oval/Straight line.

@Basenji_Boy: Put a roll of toliet paper or a couch cushion at the bottom of the stairs, that should do the trick.:D LOL…great answer!!!! :D :D :D

Glad to hear the trip went well. I'm sure there are people on here that can tell you more, but Bs are about 17 inches at the shoulder. I use my crate all the time. Deke LOVES it. He'd rather sleep in there then with us! It's also his "safe" zone. I have two (human) girls 6 and 10 they are not allowed to bother him in there.. other kids that come over are also told to leave the him alone when in his crate. It is in our kitchen so he's always near us. He actually likes it covered(it's like a den), he's in it when ever we're not home and at night. When he goes to my parents it goes to and his bankets and the cover. He gets a treat most times he goes in. We trained him to go in with the command "crate" but "bed time" works at night. When he was little we just picked him up and put him in we said "crate, good boy" and gave him treats. He just learned to love it. Good Luck

@BDawg: I have one for my two- and they do best when we're all running. If they're just walking, they end up pulling each other more often. But it's still easier than having two leashes. We have a hands free leash too… It's great if you're a runner. The dogs get used to it and it's really useful!! Here's some pics of the kids on their . I love the hands free.I picture us doing what that lady is doing while jogging only I would be running sideways :D I had kind of hoped that Dash would help pull Sissy along and Sissy would pull Dash back. In theory it sounds perfect. I have been just taking Dash for jogging and leaving Siss at home. She can't jog very far and it seems more stressful for us both.

She-Ra was one of those "Mall Pet Store" basenji's so even as a pup she'd gotten accustomed to eliminating where she ate, so crate training was really not much of a success. However, using pee-pads, if you're going to be gone, isn't a hard thing to train them to use (spray with bitter apple spray though…She-Ra LOVES to chew up the pee-pads!). We've also used "baby gates" with success to keep her out of danger rooms (kitchen, etc.). While Basenji's are natural climbers, Target sells a nice one that she's not been able to handle. Finally, just "Puppy-proof" your home and leave plenty of toys and chews around. Every now and then you'll come home to an accident, but for the most part she's quite content to have the run of (most of) the house.

I've heard of both. I've heard good things about both.

We put the dogs on our schedual instead of waiting till they have to go- We take them out first thing in the morning after they eat & before they go to bed also anytime we come home after being gone or after heavy play/training. We also walked then to get it in their heads of marking outside. They now will hold it till their walks so they can mark as much as they can.
