Vet Visit for Exam and Boosters and Anxiety
Hello Basenji owners.
My dog Miles, a 7 year old basenji needs to see the vet and post-covid he doesn't like it.
The vet suggested giving him trazadone and gabapentin before his appointment to calm him down.
Has anyone tried this before?Thank you,

Thank you for the great advice! Pat we know Anne with Toby and Carly and see them often on our walks in our neighborhood! I asked her if she knew Tanza and that's when she shared the great news you are her breeder!

Natural Remedies for UTIs
Has anyone used Pet Well Being Urinary Gold for UTI's?
Information here, https://petwellbeing.com/products/urinary-gold-for-canine-urinary-tract-health?variant=33947592163459I have changed my basenji's diet from dehydrated Stella & Chewy's to Fromm (thank you Tanza for the recommendation). Our vet wants to prescribe antibiotics and suggests neutering our 5 year old male that we don't plan on ever breeding. Thank you for the advice. On line this alternative gets good reviews, anyone use it on this forum?
Thank you!

RE: Anti-anxiety medication for separation anxiety. 14 month male B.
Interesting research on music as a calming effect? https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0031938416306977
Our Basenji Paladin could not be left alone, we tried everything, one thing sort of worked rescue remedy and touch tell massage. We had many pet sitters. Our new Basenji is so carefree and problem free it's a miracle. Miles is Basenji # 5 so maybe we just learned from all the others....
Also, a list of reads and research including the use of Bach Flower Remedies,

RE: Meet Millie!
She is so adorable! Thank you for sharing. I will defer to crate experts on this one.
For some reason Miles loves his crate, maybe he remembers getting good treats inside the crate as a puppy. Millie is so cute! ariadne -

RE: How to Find a Lost Dog (not my basenji)
Hello to all, thank you for the suggestions and responses. Sadly, yesterday the pup Dude was hit by car and did not survive. I can't imagine the pain the owner is going through right now. I learned a lot on how to find a lost dog from dog expert Susan Packer from the Bay Area and will share more soon. Sadly, he was not found in time despite the owner camping out in their car for over a week at the last locations he was spotted. I replied to help and learned so much about how kind people can be-- just like this group so willing to help! Cheers, Dude lives on with lasting memories of his short life! )

How to Find a Lost Dog (not my basenji)
Hello Basenji Forum Friends,
Does anyone have any tips on finding a lost dog? My now new friend Paul lost his 10 month old pup (not a basenji but a dingo mix with similar traits- likes to bolt etc.) he slipped out of his harness. More info here, https://www.pawboost.com/landing/pet/X_dA3LT_KTQ_CQxN0ib3SgyCXnORaYz5/lost-dude-cupertino-ca-95014
I thought what would I do and reached out to help and have been posting flyers everywhere. Does anyone have any tips on finding a lost dog? Or how to hire a reputable dog tracker in the Bay Area? Thank you! Paul is a researcher at Genentech and also a pilot for Pilots & Paws that provides free flights to rescue dogs that have a new home! Thank you! -
RE: Rabies Vaccine reaction
@kembe He is back to his same old crazy self! One thing the young tech worker told me is that most likely hit a blood vessel when they gave him the shot. Due to COVID we couldn't go with him inside the vet's office so I am sure he was a handful to keep calm. Surprisingly, the vet said he did well despite my thinking he would be hard to handle. Cheers--thanks to all of you for your comments. This Forum is so valuable!
Miles says thank you too! ![alt text]( image url) -
RE: Rabies Vaccine reaction
@kembe The vet said it was most likely a reaction. It healed up finally after 1 month! There was swelling and a scab at the injection site. I used coconut oil on top of it and it seemed to help heal it and then the scab fell off. None of our other basenji's had any type of reaction to the rabies vaccine. I am just glad it healed up. Thanks for checking in.

RE: Puppy Upset Stomach/Green Diarrhea
My heart aches for your sweet pup. The famous holistic vetdr. marty goldstein, https://drmarty.com/ now retired has great book on natural healing that provides some suggestions. I tried slippery elm and it worked, more information here, https://www.whole-dog-journal.com/care/slippery-elm-for-dogs-safely-treat-irritation/
In the gastrointestinal tract, slippery elm acts directly. Think of it as a natural Pepto-Bismol (Pepto-Bismol itself should be used with caution because it contains salicylate, a.k.a. aspirin). Slippery elm’s mucilage content coats, soothes, and lubricates the mucus membranes lining the digestive tract. Slippery elm is an excellent treatment for ulcers, gastritis, colitis, and other inflammatory bowel problems. It is high in fiber, and so helps normalize intestinal action; it can be used to relieve both diarrhea and constipation. It may also help alleviate nausea and vomiting in dogs suffering from non-GI illnesses, such as kidney disease. A syrup made from slippery elm bark (see recipe below) can be used to help heal mouth ulcers.
Slippery elm is said to relieve inflammation of virtually any mucus membrane, and has been used in the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the lungs (bronchitis, asthma), kidneys, bladder (cystitis), throat (tonsillitis), and joints (arthritis).
This wonder herb also contains many nutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, ascorbic acid, beta-carotene, calcium, and several trace minerals) that can be beneficial for dogs recuperating from any illness, and it may stay down when other foods are not tolerated.
Externally, a soothing paste of slippery elm powder (mix the powder with a little cold water) can be used as a poultice for hot spots, insect burns, rashes, scratches, ulcerated areas, or other shallow wounds. Native Americans used slippery elm bark to stop bleeding. It forms a natural bandage that can be left in place for several hours, if you can convince your dog to leave it alone! Moisten with water to remove it.
I used it with applesauce (unsweetened). Good Luck and keep us posted on his progress.

Rabies Vaccine reaction
Hello Basenji Form,
My 4 year old got his 3 year rabies vaccine and developed a scab at the place of the injection that will not heal. Has anyone seen or experience that? He also had some swelling below the injection site. He seems normal and is eating fine but it's quite unusual this is our 5th basenji and none of the others had a reaction. I have a vet appointment Sunday but just curious if anyone has experience this. Thank you! ariadne scott
