The Wait!!!!!

  • Hi everyone.
I am back after a long hiatus.
We have decided we are going to get 2 pups this season. Yes, we are crazy.
We thought about it, and thought that it would be best if they had each other to play with, and grow up together.

One will be from New World Basenjis. 1/2 Avongara from their Kita x Willow breeding, and the other was going to be from a domenstic breeding, that did not take, so instead we are going with one of the full Lukuru pups.

We went and met the Lukuru pups last weekend. They are the cutest things, and so people oriented and friendly. I can't believe how much I miss them after only 4 hours of visiting.

The wait is terrible. I am so excited.

Pics from our visit with the Lukuru pups to follow.

WOOHOO… you could not have picked better breeders!!! I have been watching the Lukuru pups since the day they were born... And love the Breeding that Karla is doing (Willow and Kita)....

    Congrats.... great choices!!!

  • Awesome! I am sooo jealous! I wanna puppy!!!! No…must be strong :) I need to talk to Jo so I can go see the Lukuru babies :) Congrats on your soon to be new additions!

  • You will have double the work, and double the joy, but I bet your up to it…
Kudo's on your great choice of puppies.

  • Major congrats! I really think 2 at once is wonderful… play mate and all that. As long as you spend lots of time individually so they bond with you... which you will... double the work but double the fun. I am envious!

  • I can't wait to see them. And I'm really jealous about the Lukuru puppy. I love Dr. Jo's dogs, particularly Amisi. I'm going to have to vicariously live through you guys until next year. I have serious puppy envy. :)

  • The waiting is the worst part- I am waiting for my puppy now and the countdown is between 9-10 weeks away so I feel your excitement, I thought about getting two but I am not brave enough so I figure one for now and next years another one. Congratulations on your new family members!!

  • It's not that we overbook. It's that stupid clients book a haircut and get there and decide they want colour too! They demand we do it so what else are we supposed to do? I'd say 70% of our clients want more than they actually booked in for. So give us a break ok.

  • All those puppies look so sweet! Congratulations on picking your dogs from a great breeder.

  • Hi Nicole!

I just signed up here. I'm looking forward to seeing the Kita x Willow pups in 3 weeks!

@eeeefarm said in Wet weather exercise: @elbrant said in Wet weather exercise: I wish I could take the credit for Doodle. But she was trained and taught before I brought her home. If she is still reliable you can take credit for that. So many times a well trained animal goes to a new home and within months the good manners and training evaporates. Seen it many, many times with horses, not quite so often with dogs but they don't tend to change hands so often. Unfortunately people often reinforce bad behaviour without being aware of what they are doing, and then complain because the "stupid" animal has developed bad habits! I concur. If it isn't maintained, then behaviors erode.

I know too many puppies and dogs injured or killed due to collars left on unattended. Not worth the risk.

Like much internet advice I find short answers incomplete - and mine was. I really want to ad that making a crate/xpen/gated puppy area should never be seen as "punishment". These partitioned puppy areas should be conditioned to be safe places for a puppy/dog. Mine, thankfully, tolerates and even likes her xpens probably because it's where she eats, receives treats, sleeps, chews and even plays. This took about a week or so. Now she voluntarily goes into her xpens (in my case) on her own and when she's put there involuntarily she might whine for a minute before settling down with a chew and/or going to sleep.

@seattlebasenji said in Potty Training Difficulty - 12-15 mo old Basenji: *** Any ideas about how I can effectively potty train him? *** You mention that you take your dog to the same area when you take him out to 'toilet', I suppose thinking that he'll associate that spot as his bathroom(?). But I think you would be more successful if you took your dog out for long walks. Your dog needs exercise anyway, and movement begets movement (if you know what I mean). Besides, walking is a very social activity for dogs. They walk in packs and when you walk with your dog, you become part of their pack. Some people like two half hour walks each day. Personally, I try to get one really long walk in every day (weather permitting), typically 3 miles or 90 minutes. Sometimes shorter, sometimes longer. (I got bored walking the same route. Now we go different places (local dog parks, woods, and such) and explore new routes. Mix it up a little. The walk provides time for the two of you to bond. It's an opportunity for you to reinforce training, provide encouragement (and praise). And it allows your dog to eliminate (or toilet), naturally, without pressure.

It's getting that balance and the car they you could/would buy. So saying, I would think - with the economy the way that it is - that it's potentially a buyers market out there.

Congrats on picking a breeder and getting on the future puppy list…hope you are successful in getting a pup! :D How exciting! Oh, and regarding the sleeping - I truly think the secret weapon for sleep, besides wearing my pup out before bed, was the snugglepuppy that Lisa (lvoss) recommended. Definitely get one of those! Liyah had no problems sleeping - I only remember her crying the first 2 nights and then only for 15 or 20 minutes, otherwise, I've always had my full night sleep. So sleepwise, for me a puppy was easy, as was potty training.
