First Season

Basenji Puppy Pen
  • Hi,
Safi has just gone into her first season at 6.5 months old, is she likely to have another season this year in the Autumn?
Complete behaviour transformation too, she's really chilled out at the moment, very sweet and compliant. I'm assuming that'll all change back when she finishes this season!

  • In my experience (in the breed for 35+ years), she will most likely not have another season seeing that we are just about in August. However since we know that not all Basenjis read the same books, possible she might. Change in behavior is pretty normal.... during being in season. They usually go back to their normal temperament but not all at once. Post season can last for a month or so.

  • Thanks Pat, hopefully she read the memo and will be done for the year. I don't miss the zooming, though it was somewhat entertaining. She's sleeping a lot and not as into everything as usual.

  • Aw, welcome to womanhood Safi! We swear it's not so bad all the time LOL

@zande - You bet! We must be showing our ages! Or Been There/Done That! Very few times we disagree, but when we do we respect the others point of view!

Like much internet advice I find short answers incomplete - and mine was. I really want to ad that making a crate/xpen/gated puppy area should never be seen as "punishment". These partitioned puppy areas should be conditioned to be safe places for a puppy/dog. Mine, thankfully, tolerates and even likes her xpens probably because it's where she eats, receives treats, sleeps, chews and even plays. This took about a week or so. Now she voluntarily goes into her xpens (in my case) on her own and when she's put there involuntarily she might whine for a minute before settling down with a chew and/or going to sleep.

@jkent I have certainly never even heard that advice and would not have taken it if I had. It depends on the conditions underfoot, the breed, the size of the puppy (some breeds have very large ones !), off leash or regimented walking, stopping to admire the view / watch the puppy socialise with dogs he/she meets. SO many things to take into consideration. I wouldn't pay much attention to generic advice from the KC. Our breed is 'different' !

@creambasenji said in New Puppy Advice: She's 9 months and 8.5 pounds. Doesn't seem she will be getting any bigger This must be a typo. 9 months or 9 weeks? At any rate, I'd love to see a picture of a cream Basenji, toy or not.

@Nerthin: I have already signed up for puppy beginners class at Petsmart, my girl friend works there so she gets a free training class. Then I was told after about a year is when you can really get serious about lure coursing and agilities. Lure trials can be great places to socialize a young pup and it is good to introduce them to the sights and sounds of trial. You do not want to overdo but getting them out so they see what is going on can be a good thing. As for agility, you may want to see if you have any pre-agility or puppy agility classes around you. These classes are great at building confidence, they don't have jumps but start laying groundwork for working in agility.
