Westminster 2007

Basenji Talk

  • WELL i was disappointed, i did my research and its come to my knowledge, that NO basenji has ever won best in show at west, and in fact has only once has a B won best in breed (group : hound) idk, im just wondering why i guess…o well...any thoughts as to why? im guessing politics!!

  • wow that brindle was fabulous! all of them were gorgeous! i love it when they self stack. yall wait, next year fender will be there. haha. he would chew the place apart.

  • I remember that a basenji won at the Crufts dog show in England a few years ago.

  • Yes a basenji won Crufts in 2001. My mum owned his auntie until she passed away.
I like the brindle alot that won BOB at Westminster, very striking!

  • I was pouting (ok, not exactly pouting, just sort of) that the B didn't win BIS and my DH says "Well that's just because it wasn't OUR Basenji!". We both looked at Giz and he proceeded to lick his behind. So much for that!

The people we got him from said he was a show dog with his original owners, but I don't know if that is the case. They also said he was most recently (before them) owned by a breeder. He is extremely well behaved for a stud dog that didn't get much human affection, so I guess we just don't know his history  Mystery Giz.

  • I actually went to West this year & I took the afternoon off from work to see the Basenjis ;) and it was REALLY great because our breeder was there with one of C3's relatives! El Dorado Echo Skies (or something like that) competed & he got honorable mention :( :(

The brindle that did win the breed was very nice looking & the FUNNY thing was that when they were going to place him for his winning picture he put his paws up on the table sniffed the table & then proceeded to HOP ON with NOOOO help LOL :D LOL it was so hysterical!! All the other small dogs are placed on the tables ha ha ha!!

My little boy C3 finished & I guess our breeder didn't continue to show him once he finished. DH thinks he could've won WEST BIS too!! LOL :D :D

Us B parents have high aspirations :D

  • @jys1011:

competed & he got honorable mention :( :(

uh…..getting an Award of Merit, or honorable mention is HUGE at Westminster! Something people brag about :)

Lucky you for getting to go! I have always wanted to, but never actually feel like traveling in February!

  • ha ha I guess I REALLY wanted the little guy to WIN :D due to the storm a lot of people were stranded with their dogs in NYC. Lots of cancelled flights.

  • was it the red and white without the full collar? that was my personal fav, but what do i know?i love that even though they are at this fancy dogshow they still jump up and act basenji-ish. :)

  • i love it when jack does that psycho thing where he jumps in a mini circle with his head stright up, lol,. like a bolt of electricity schocked him, hehe

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

Ah ok cool thanks, I had something like that when Safi was smaller and it was the most successful for sure. She outgrew it quite quickly though

I can't listen to that, it would wake my girl up and well... I'm not into a "sing along" just now. ;) I will say that many canines howl and yodel and bay (at the moon, whenever a fire truck passes, etc.). I'm not certain that any one breed is distinctive enough to have a sound all their own, but many a proud owner would probably assert so.

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

That was amazing…he was a gorgeous boy. I'm watching the breed selection video now and all those dogs are beautiful! Of all the B's in the breed video, number 9 (little girl) a tri beauty who stopped to scratch an itch during judging, number 16 (little girl) a black and white, and number 18 (little boy) a red and white are my favorites. They were all beautiful, but those really stuck in my mind. What I found so amusing is that number 9 the one that scratched her itch was the best of breed for our little angels. She did a wonderful job and showed beautifully. She was a great representative of this breed!
