• Okay, as many of you know I am new to the forums and have recently adopted or been adopted by a Basenji mix, a red and white one year old male. My mom named him Beeji and he is a sweet heart.

Tonight the three of us were watching TV, Beeji on the couch, Mom in her recliner and me in mine. I had gotten sleepy and had reclined back and was almost asleep when I heard a short loud high pitched ruup sound.

When I looked up, there stood Beeji at the foot of my recliner. I asked him what was wrong? and he leapt up into the recliner with me. He proceeded to climb up to my shoulder and then curled up and tucked his nose under my chin and began to snore.

A few moments later he stretched out full length all four feet up in the air, his head thrown back on my shoulder hard and fast asleep.

Is this typical of Basenjis? or is it coming from his terrier side? He was completely relaxed. After a while, he rolled over on his side, took his mouth and placed it over my nose. I told him No Teeth and he stopped and then licked my nose. He wasn't biting, just mouthing. However, I believe in no teeth touching so I always tell him no teeth and either distract him or ignore him if he gets too rough. This wasn't rough at all, he just rolled over and put his mouth on my nose almost like a kid would put their thumb in their mouth.

Right now, he is in my bed, with this head on the pillow flat out asleep. When it is time for me to go to bed, he will gladly get in his crate but as long as I am up, he wants to be on my bed.

I am learning more and more every day!

Oh by the way, we had our second Basenji display of shredding. Mom hasn't got it down yet that she can't put paper towels in her trashcan so this afternoon, here comes Beeji with a paper towel in mouth, tearing into the living room where he flops down and begins to shred the towel!! He made a lovely mess and seemed to enjoy himself royally!

    aloha,
    Cheryl

  • Abby sleeps with us all the time, she has never slept all nite in her crate she stays in there all day while we're at work. she doesn't howl at me to get up on my lap she just does it. she does not however like to sleep on her back but my other dog that is a terrier mix does.

  • He sounds pretty typical basenji to me Cheryl. They want to be where you, and make themselves completely comfortable on you. Abbey used to be a terrible mouther when she was little (she's 3 now) and I taught her No Bite. Kiss. When she'd start to mouth at my hand or whatever, I'd say No Bite, Kiss, and she would give me a little lick instead.

  • Jazzy sleeps in the weirdest positions, and if she's in a lap she'll either be curled up in a ball or on her back with her head flopped over the person's leg or arm {upside down} and her feet straight up in the air!

  • Alani will almost always curl up in a ball when she's not sleeping on us however when she's relaxed (waking up from a nap) and she wants to snuggle with us she'll flop down in very awkward positions. And if she's woken up from a nap all curled up she'll roll over on her back with her legs stiff as a board and just lay there like that for a while before getting up or curling back into a ball to go back to sleep.

I too use the No Bite, Kisses and he is getting there. If he gets too rough, I just pull away and ignore him, it doesn't take long before he will reach over and give a gentle kiss.

I am having so much fun with him. He is the most loving dog I have ever owned and we are learning lots from each other.

Yesterday he "saved" me from the UPS truck! He saw it pull up outside on the curb and he set off with a series of barks that hit a pitch that hurt! Of course once he saw the man get out, he was all wiggles and wanting to play with him.
