May we introduce Malaika

Show Off Your Dog

  • She is lovely Shelley - i hope you have many happy years with her

  • Congratulations on the new baby. (My Bryn is her great-grandfather).

  • Again, thank you everyone for your responses.
Petra, we have to watch her closely with the Cats, as yet she's still a bit wary as i don't think she'd seen Cats before but she's getting bolder by the day.
Tom is a cool laid back Cat and is very tolerate when she's sniffing him and pushing him along like a train, he's slapped her a few times but is quite gentle.
Jerry is rather nervous and has exploded in her face a few times.

Lisa what is Bryn's show name then i can find him on her pedigree. One of her great Grandads is Jolly Swagman who was my first Basenji's Grandad.

  • Great pics!!! Congrats on a beautiful B!

  • Congrats Shelley!

    Great to see CoCo's sister!

Having 'puter prob's at home so logging in at work!

    Catch up again soon,

    Alan

  • Just for the record :) half of our dogs have umbilical hernias, and I have done the massage back into place with every one of them as a puppy…it has never worked :) Open hernia just means that the muscle is separated, and if it is small..just a little fat has poked through. A closed hernia would be one where the fat has poked through, and then the muscle closed, so there is still a blob, but no possiblity that anything else could slip thru. Only a large, as in large hole, not fat blob would carry the risk of intestines slipping thru.

I had Blondie's fixed at one point when she had her teeth cleaned, because it was big enough that I was concerned about it in the case of pregnancy. Turned out we never bred her, but the correction was super simple.

  • First Basenji's

Congrats! She's so beautiful and has the sweetest face! She looks so sweet and innocent, although I suspect that looks can be deceiving :)

  • Shelley, what a beautiful pup! Bet you couldn't wait to get her, but it was definitely worth the wait! May I ask, who is the B in your avatar? I haven't been on the Forum for too long, so I don't know.

On the other note, I haven't really caught up with all the readings in other sections (school and two jobs kinda take some time away from basenji readings ;) ), but Lana has a hernia too. We got her as 21-month old, so I never really got to do what some of you guys are suggesting with puppies. I am assuming it does not work on adults? I did take her to the vet when we first got her, and the vet said it's not a problem, it's not the actual intestines poking out, just fat (?) like some of you guys were saying here. Andrea mentioned that it could be a problem during pregnancy?

Sorry to ask this question here, only because someone already started talking about that…

  • I can second what Quercus says I have had two with hernias now, and I tried massaging them back in to place with no luck. My first bitch was bred from twice and we never had any trouble.

    Steve.

The Basenji in my avatar is Benji we lost him last Feb at the age of 14 1/2.
    He was a rum character.

  • I have had hernias disappear with manipulation but I wonder if they might have closed any way. I'd never know.

As I posted before, there's no real problem as its unusual for these hernias to cause troubles. I'm sure Elaine willl confirm this.

Yes, I too have had a bitch operated on as the opening had started to close when she was 12 years old. It was a very simple op and once the stitches had gone you wouldn't know there had been anything there!! The UK KC frowns on these ops now.

Helena, i am aware the KC frown on these ops and isn't it wrong.
It could encourage people to not have things fixed . Why on earth should an op like this prevent a Dog from being shown, it's madness.
For me the Dogs health would always come first , but i still think they're wrong.
    Whoops sorry to rant:o

What cuties!! GL with them:) I would have chosen Tempest for Ariel's call name, but it was too close to our labradoodles name, Tessie.
