Trying Your Dog's Food :D

  • Got milk?!

  • I would have to point out that food made for pets is NOT safe for human consumption. There is not the level of sanitation that is required to be safe for humans to eat. Our digestive system is much different than that of a dog. For the most part dogs do not get sick from things like Salmonella or E. coli. These things can actually make a human so sick they will die!

Don't eat pet food, people. It is just a bad idea.

Well, I don't know. (Miranda or is it Jason - I actually thought you guys would write about the humanizing aspect. :D)

Both Newman's Organics and Natural Balance use human grade - at least that's what they claim. I saw both Paul Newman and Dick Van Patten on Jay Leno actually eat their own brands of dog foods - canned - claimed it to be yummy .

I'm not talking a serving size of Dog Chow, I'm talking a single piece of kibble (high quality - Orijen for instance) and a piece of biscuit.

I guarantee their are worse things in our human food chain. FWIW, I actually got E. Coli from eating fresh spinach purchased at Whole Foods .

  • Even if a company claims to use 'human grade' products, the facilities and practices used in production of the product are not kept to human food-grade sanitation standards. I don't think a single piece of high end dog kibble would kill you. I am just saying it is not a good idea, in general, to eat food that isn't produced specifically for people.

Well I feed my boys..and one girl The Honest Kitchen, Preference or Sojos, grainfree dogfood mix, and I am amazed at how good it smells. I have tried it, before I mixed the raw meat into it (even though I am on 85% raw myself, raw meat doesn't sound appetizing so I won't try that), and it was very tasty, especially the Sojos, it smells and taste like the best meatloaf..minus the meat of course.
The Honest Kitchen has human taste testers on their staff and their treats makes my two legged kids mouths water..

I have yet to try kibble, or canned for that matter, but I can also add, that Merrick's canned foods look like the best stews ever..my fur kids didn't like them however and I am still baffled as to why they didn't..maybe because they have had raw and that is their favorite ..no need to go canned, in their opinion.

  • If dog food was the mainstay of a human diet, I could see many problems ensuing. However, I can remember as a child tasting my cat's and dog's food just to see why they liked it so much. Didn't do me any harm.

    I'm fine!…I'm fine!....I'm fine!....(sorry, backfire) :D

  • I too can remember eating a Dog biscuit as a child, it was a Black one and tasted like charcoal, yuk.
When my boys were young i had a friend who was a strict vegetarian and fed her baby son a wholesome veggie diet. Once he was crawling he crawled to the cats dish, scooped out a handful of tinned cat food and ate it :D

  • When I was a kid I tried dog biscuits many times thinking one must taste as good as it smelled - NOT! Never did find a good one.

  • I've never done it, but have been very tempted to try freeze dried liver treats.

  • etzbseder: Knock yourself out. Liver sounds very unappetizing to me. I'll give my share to AJ.

  • Haha. I've made myself heart from the grocery store, and I liked it. I've had liver and onions and chopped liver, and they were good too. Freeze dried, just dounds so … dry... Medjai seems to like it though.

And many of the premium canned foods are fine to mix it… I happen to make my own "wet" mix and I always recommend that dry is mixed with something regardless if you make it yourself or use a good canned food.... Cause it gets pretty boring to just eat the same old dry day after day after day (In my opinion)

I was feeding my Basenji brand blue and she started getting crystals in her kidneys. With the recommendation from my pet store owner (Pet Ranch), switched to Nature's Variety Instinct RAW. Withing 2 months…all crystals are gone. Now Basenji, Rotty, and Puppy Mastiff/Pitt all get Nature's Variety. Their coats are very shiney and teeth are so white.

@Ellusionz: I've just swapped my dog to Wellness Core. It's high in protein which I was told is really good for the basenji breed with how active they are. Also grain-free. But they say it shouldn't be fed to dogs younger than a year. They sell it at Petco. There's also the regular Wellness that Petsmart carries thats been rated just below the Core. I researched the ingredients in the brands on dogfoodchat.com I thought about going with a high protien …. i'll deff look into that for next time after this huge bag is done :)

HAHAHAHA…....Basenji's in coconut (maybe walnut shell) bra's. I see it in my minds eye during one of those kangaroo boxing type matches my 2 get in when they are playing--standing on hind legs and slapping each other up-side the head!! Hips and b. tails wiggling within grass skirts. What a video that would make. Sorry, back to topic. That food looks great. I'd also like to hear what those out there think.

I went to two health food type pet stores yesterday and asked a bunch of questions about the different types of holistic dog foods and other foods that they had. I came away from both stores with several brochures and tons of food samples!! From one store I got a plastic grocery bag FULL of Timberwolf Organics and from the other store I got a bag full of EVO Innova samples. Enough to feed these guys for more than a week!! I had no idea that you could get samples from the stores!! The dogs seem to love both brands. We're taking it slow though so I can keep track of the reactions. They currently eat Nutro Max Ultra Puppy.
