Beano is shedding

    My Beano was overweight with thyroid problems and our vet has her on Thyrosine twice a day.

    This medicine has taken the weight off but she is shedding a lot (to the point of almost bald in spots) and her skin is very very dry

    She would lay on the bed or a chair all day if I were to let her. When I do make her go outside for awhile she just lays on the porch. She won't even
    play with the other dogs.

    What should I be checking for?

    Maybe the amino acid thyrosine isn't handling it? She should be energetic and the fur should now look good. I would call the vet right away and let them know she's got some problems. What about putting her on Soloxine thyroid med?

    Thank you for the quick reply….....Where do I get the Soloxine? The vet has looked at her and he really doesn't say much..........maybe I should try another vet

    Soloxine is the meds most vets use for thyroid problems, or at least that is what I was told when our non B was given i for his thyroid..so a Vets office or even online, but it does require a perscription.

    I've had 2 previous Bs on Soloxine. It has to be prescribed by a vet. Did she get a full blood work up done to show thyroid levels? Didn't the vet go over the test? Go to another vet! If you have that test from the vet fax it to Dr. Dodds. She is an expert in hypothroid and reading blood tests that some vets miss. She may want a blood sample sent to her to do a more in depth test.

    You need to ask your Vet for Soloxine or a RX for Soloxine (as you can buy it on the web usually much cheaper then from the Vet) I have found that Soloxine (and NOT the Generic stuff either) is really the best for controling thyroid.

    However you are going to find that typically when the thyroid is really out of "wack" that they will shed really heavy as their thyroid gets back to normal…. But I would still only go for the Soloxine (the real stuff). And it can take 4 to 6 months for the hair coat to get back to normal when they are shedding out an old coat and growing in new....

    How old is she?

    You want to make sure the dose is correct too. The dog usually get's retested to check the thyroid levels.

    That's right usually in 6 months after beginning treatment

    This bothers me that you said the vet doesn't really say much. If a vet doesn't fully explain test results and why a med is given and or options, I would go to another vet.

    I agree with Dan about the vet not saying much. My vet always give in-depth explainations on why we are running the test and when we get the results back a full discussion on what the numbers mean and how they are interperted. I also ask for a copy of all the tests run (raw numbers and summary write up) So any reason I need to seek a second opinion I can. Don't forget to ask questions of your vet. Sometimes they just assume you may know what they are talking about.

    yes, vets…go and see another one! I lost one dog because the vet took too long to find out that my previous dog had be poisonned by rat poison (an italian greyhound). vets do what they can of course but...some are definitely better than others, so...when in doubt, change!

    Have you considered feeding raw food (meat and vegetables)? It worked wonders for our B's coat and overall health.

    Tommy I have a similar brush and that is probably the best one I have found to remove hair and he enjoys the massage it gives, at least his hair is heavy enough to stay on the ground not like the Cornish rex we have, his hair is like dust it get's everywhere, don't need extra fibre in our food during shedding time, I'm sure we must ingest an amount YUCK!!, should of got a Sphinx cat and a Mexican hairless dog.     Thanks everyone for all of the helpful information! We did go and visit someone with a Basenji shorly after I had first posted this question. My son and husband played with the dog and hugged it and it licked them. We stayed for a while. no issues! we are expecting our new Basenji to arrive around the middle of this month. very excited!

    Oakley ( at 18 months) has this past year shed out of season in addition to his winter shedding….in my house you just never know when it's gonna happen...but when it happens you know it.

    My first question is why are you bathing her every two weeks? Is she roling in manure or something else with a nasty stench? I have 4 basenjis in my house. Two that are going on 2 years old: One bitch was shown in early July… she was bathed that weekend. One bitch was shown back in March.... she was bathed in late March. The two 5 month old pups were bathed in mid-August for the first time. I don't have grass in my yard.. just pine trees and weeds and wood chips... which means they are in dirt all the time. I wipe them down with a hot wet towel when they come in... but that is it. I must preface this with the fact that I HATE DUST AND DIRT of any nature to touch me. If they were dusty, I would wipe them down. But bathing them every two weeks? HECK NO. That is why I have basenjis... I am not a groomer, and hate dealing with grooming... bathe for shows, and very little else. And my dogs are CLEAN to the touch.... Perhaps you should bathe them a bit less often and use a super good scrubber to scratch out the dead hair… that should be enough I'd think.... of course, I am coming from the point that I don't have dogs that get an undercoat... so perhaps it is quite different. Please don't take offense at what I suggest... I just can't imagine having to bathe a basenji that often.

    @elena86: Sometimes, Senji could just be laying on the floor for a few minutes and when he stands up, there's a pile of fur laying on the carpet. I've had to wash his blankets every day. I could probably knit a sweater with all the fur that gets caught in the dryer's lint filter. :rolleyes: Same here with Timbo thought at first he had a skin problem, it is too cold to change his winter coat too his summer coat :rolleyes:
