Shedding Basenji

    HI all,

    We are nearly coming into spring and Kaiser has started to shed. Just wanted to ask members what method they use to get through shedding. I find the hairs on his legs are the hardest to remove and are the ones that tend be left on the sofa, so any tricks of the trade please share. Thanks.

    Oakley will be four this year and while he generally has two sheds a year (one major, one minor).. I have found this year he has been awful all year long. This past week he too has started a big "molt"….he gets flustered or someone touches him...A MILLION white hairs fly onto his black coat....I brush him outside....I have to wash my sheets and vacuum the couches ALL the time...I itch all the time- I don't think there is anything to ease the annoyance. I do put down sheets or blankets on the couches...and I own a dyson (which is my trick for getting the hard to remove hairs). Sometimes I roll duck tape inside out, and pluck the couches...

    I have a flea comb and use it to comb and remove most of the loose hair. I have a shedding blade but can't find it so this is doing a decent job

    Hey, have you noticed that his white hairs shed out more vs the black???? Uzie has this white band on his neck and tip of tail and my husband is amazed that he can pull these out and the black are not so messy…..

    I just find that brushing against and then quickly back over will remove most hairs. Mostly however, the vaccum is our friend....Nature is nature and will continue to be even though we bring nature in our homes. Isn't that what we wanted to do a thousand years ago?

    Before we started to collec basenji'we were very into asiatic spitz breeds, The shiba inu is very similar to B's, specially in temperment. If you want to talk about shedding, the Japanese akita ,shiba inus and the Korian jindo shed twice a year. The have very heavy winter coats and for a month in spring our gome looked like we had decorated with beige fur.

    I notice his white hair (especially his collar) are the worst. I could pluck and pluck forever and theyd never stop flying out! i am amazed he isn't bald! I have a friend with two shiba inu and another who owns three and I could never do it, too much shedding!

    That's what I find the white hairs are the worst, Chealsie508 I also have a Dyson and am using it often - time for me to not be so fussy. If the weather was nicer I would be brushing Kaiser more often, will probably give him a bath in a week or so that seems to help and a comb with a flea comb like Debra mentioned. I think the main problem is he doesn't have a special spot on the sofa as he will snuggle with all of us depending on who looks most inviting and of course the stealing of warm spots, just thankful the cat has one spot on a blanket up on the back of the sofa. Think I was spoilt by having a toy poodle even though they take a lot of grooming in other ways. Roll on summer.

    Tommy I have a similar brush and that is probably the best one I have found to remove hair and he enjoys the massage it gives, at least his hair is heavy enough to stay on the ground not like the Cornish rex we have, his hair is like dust it get's everywhere, don't need extra fibre in our food during shedding time, I'm sure we must ingest an amount YUCK!!, should of got a Sphinx cat and a Mexican hairless dog.

    Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

    Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

    There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

    My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

    My first question is why are you bathing her every two weeks? Is she roling in manure or something else with a nasty stench? I have 4 basenjis in my house. Two that are going on 2 years old: One bitch was shown in early July… she was bathed that weekend. One bitch was shown back in March.... she was bathed in late March. The two 5 month old pups were bathed in mid-August for the first time. I don't have grass in my yard.. just pine trees and weeds and wood chips... which means they are in dirt all the time. I wipe them down with a hot wet towel when they come in... but that is it. I must preface this with the fact that I HATE DUST AND DIRT of any nature to touch me. If they were dusty, I would wipe them down. But bathing them every two weeks? HECK NO. That is why I have basenjis... I am not a groomer, and hate dealing with grooming... bathe for shows, and very little else. And my dogs are CLEAN to the touch.... Perhaps you should bathe them a bit less often and use a super good scrubber to scratch out the dead hair… that should be enough I'd think.... of course, I am coming from the point that I don't have dogs that get an undercoat... so perhaps it is quite different. Please don't take offense at what I suggest... I just can't imagine having to bathe a basenji that often.
