  • Sounds like a good plan, congrats.
..oh the wait..it would kill me, but you what they say..the one who waits for something good, I mean great…

  • That is so exciting!! I love both of those dogs :) Congrats!

  • Good choice! I really like Karla and her dogs. She's on my short list if I get another basenji some day. It's going to seem like forever! Trust me! :p

  • Pat, I don't think the waiting is the hard part,…the losing sleep with a puppy is the hard part. But you can't beat having a sweet pup to love.

But the losing sleep part is totally worth it! :D

  • I do think that having a basenji puppy is wonderful. Its a lot of work, but done correctly, you will have a companion from pup to senior.
I can't wait until you start sending photos of your new addition.

  • Sharron, the only one that ever kept us up at night was Nicky. Rally was easy, only asking to go out once a night. Rio and Sophie were born here and so I think that made the transition easier. That and I know Sam cheats and sneaks them in bed after their 2 am potty break but it is all in the hopes of having one that sleeps curled up next to his chest. So far this has been an utter failure and they sleep almost anywhere but there. I am sure he hasn't given up hope though and he will probably sneak the next one out at night too.

  • That is what I mean by a good owner…I mean, I think b's belong in the bed with their people..having puppy breath next to you is wonderful.

Do you think your b's get too hot sleeping next to hubby?
During this heat wave we had up here in the PNW, I would have loved for the 2 b's to sleep some place else, but nope, there were in bed with me.
The photos of this pup will be a joy to behold.

  • No, they sleep by his legs, on his head, behind his back, as I said pretty much anywhere but right next to his chest which is what he wants. Nicky is the only one who will sleep there and he sleeps next to me unless I am out of town.

  • Congrats on picking a breeder and getting on the future puppy list…hope you are successful in getting a pup! :D How exciting!

Oh, and regarding the sleeping - I truly think the secret weapon for sleep, besides wearing my pup out before bed, was the snugglepuppy that Lisa (lvoss) recommended. Definitely get one of those!

Liyah had no problems sleeping - I only remember her crying the first 2 nights and then only for 15 or 20 minutes, otherwise, I've always had my full night sleep. So sleepwise, for me a puppy was easy, as was potty training.

It's getting that balance and the car they you could/would buy. So saying, I would think - with the economy the way that it is - that it's potentially a buyers market out there.

Thanks for the information. I may look into this a bit as it seems workable. Once I adopt, it is for life no matter what the situation I just want to try and avoid a problem by this research. I know that it isn't great but truthfully I have never had a dog that does not kill iquanas and yet those same dogs have been totally safe around even the smallest bottle fed kittens. Poor iquanas, they must taste really good. Every once an a while a sleeping iquana falls off his branch and lands on my deck. We have about five minutes of chaos as I try to catch any dogs and put them away before…

Pat, I've also been guiding them here and asking them to become members so they can learn a little more about Basenji's than they already know. Many people thinking of this breed think they are barkless, odorless, and are trainable! After reading a few threads they either come back and say no way, or show me where to go from here.

I have to say there are some folks in the midwest who 'sound' like they are ok but are not - if you want to email me off list happy to provide references for lots of reputable b folks. dmcarty100@yahoo.com
