Stop Laughing at Me!

Basenji Talk

  • Abbey used to have (emphasis on the used to part) a Funny Man. He had a big head and big ears, long arms and legs, and bright red hair that stuck out in all directions. The best part was when you tilted him over, he laughed. When he laughed at her she would try to pull out his hair. One day I put Funny Man on the corner shelf next to the sofa for safe keeping ha ha and while I was cooking she climbed on the arm of the sofa, stretched really big and got him and two books. When I came back there was FM scalped, minus his brain which came out through the hole in his head when she chewed his ear off. He's not laughing anymore!

  • LOL i had to laugh when you mentioned his brains falling out … B's are so one track minded...

It depends. I've never had to crate another breed forever, but my one basenji would get destructive if left alone.. the 2nd one would pee on my bed. So crating it was. However, I'm home so they were rarely crated. My current basenji is fine loose as long as she's alone. So like they said, do it slow, confine to an area that is safe and see how it works out. But if you need to keep crating, most dogs sleep far more than people.. up to 17 hrs a day. Just exercise before and lots after so they aren't bored.

Basenjis are best! It is impossible for my husband and I to be around Kipawa and not smile or laugh. :) How wonderful that yours can lift your spirits as well!

I buy 12 inch 'sticks, thick ones, and then toss the last 2 inches to prevent the 3 am barf. My guys are older and the sticks last for several days. They would be too expensive if they ate them in an hour!

The old adage - "A tired Basenji is a good Basenji" - comes to mind. :) Last thing we do at night before turning in is either walk ours or take her to the park. Then she gets a chew to keep her busy while we're getting ready for bed, then everyone's under the covers (she burrows). Even then, there are nights…especially if the cat is out and about being adventurous. You have my sympathy... :)

Over thanksgiving last year, I went out of town for the week to visit my folks. The normal person that keeps my Basenjis was also out of town that week. My husband's sister volunteer to keep them. I tried to warn her of all the things she needed to put up and away. My guys are older and in a basenji proof house are ok left out (not crated) all day. She forgot to shut the bathroom door one day before work. She got home and they had gently pulled the TP from the holder and ran up and down the hallway making many trips folding the paper back and forth on itself. She didn't forget to shut the door again.:D They also took a whole box of facial tissue off the end table and shreded it. She said it looked like it had snowed in her living room.:p
