Do you know this breeder?

  • Does anyone know this breeder? Christian Esh on Engola Road in Newburg, PA. His name is on the paperwork as the breeder of my boy. I want to know if he is a legit breeder or not. I also want to know more about my boy's background and testing. On the paperwork it says Sire: Noah's Landing Bongo Drum, Registration # PA-ABA-0550958-001 Dame: Esh's Trixie Jewel, Registration #PA-ABA-0502823-005. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have never heard of this person nor is he a member of the Basenji Club of America (responsible breeders are typically members of the National Parent club)
I also looked for the sire and dam in Sally Wallis's pedigree site (AKC registered and foreign registered dogs) and neither are there. I also checked OFA (in case there happened to be any testing done) and neither dog are there either.

Conclusion, this is not a responsible breeder. So I doubt you will find any health or background information on your boy.

Did you happen to get a pedigree that shows grandparents? Many times Back Yard Breeders, Pure for profit breeders, and puppymiller at some point did have AKC registered dogs.

In your boy's case, I would get the DNA Fanconi test done… as soon as possible so that you know that outcome.

  • Just had a quick look on here and neither of these dogs have come up I'm afraid. Maybe someone can shed some light for you.

  • You beat me to it Tanza:D

  • Thanks guys! Hey I thought the Fanconi test was not done until age 4.

  • Do I just call my vet and ask him to do a DNA Fanconi test?

  • No, there is a bit more to it than that. Please see some of the other threads on Fanconi. They will lead you to the right places, as I don't know the addresses off the top of my head.

You basically have to register with the Canine Phenome Project, print out the forms, get blood collected a certain way, send it overnight, and wait about 6 weeks.

  • If you go to the BHE website there is a FAQ about the Fanconi Test, http://www.basenjihealth.org

As others have noted, you can find the information about the Fanconi Test at www.basenjihealth.org

Also, as far as being of age 4, that is when people start monthly strip testing (except that it really should be at age 3). Before we had the test the only way to check was to strip test monthly starting at age 3yrs, as Fanconi is late onset. Also people that have had results come back from the DNA test as Affected, they know that they must continue to strip test monthly starting at age 3.

  • Again, Thanks for all your help!

Those registration numbers are ACA numbers. ACA may be able to provide you with some pedigree background information. Although ACA is not a widely recognized registry, it does keep some pedigree information.

  • Do you have a kennel name on this person? How old is your pup? Is this an Amish breeder? Did you get your puppy directly from this breeder? We are researching breeders in that area for a pedigree.

There is no kennel name just the breeders name. Actually I never thought about an Amish breeder but that could actually be correct. I think Newburg is about 3 hours away from me and Lancaster is sort of near there. I'll have to check on that. I did NOT get my B from him directly. We rescued him from a pet store. He was there stuck in a crate for 3.5 months. I hope this helps.

99.9% of the time, puppies that come from a pet store are from a puppy mill. Responsible breeders never sell puppies to pet stores. The good news is that he has a good and happy home now… so the best thing you can do now is love him, give him a great home, get him DNA tested for Fanconi... and next time you want a puppy, go to a responsible breeder....

  • And buying from a petstore just ensure that puppy mills produce more animals since now there is a 'market'. painful as it is - you should leave puppies in the pet store because while you may save one - you really have just condemed many more.

Try a reputable rescue organization or a reputable breeder - I am just amazed that so many people on this list that have heard the horror stories and have gotten good information from those of us who have been 'walking the talk' for many years - still seem to find the worse situations possible to get a dog.

    We can help you.

  • Wow, I know this is an old thread, but the sire of this dog - Bongo - was just signed over to BRAT today!!

  • wow! what do you know- I have to say that given the circumstances, BRAT is the best place he could end up- it didn't sound like he came from a responsible breeder so hopefully he finds a good home- Thanks for sharing

Just wanted to update this thread with Dr. Gonto's response: My words in black and Dr. Gonto's in red. Do you think her results will still be accurate, given she threw up this morning? That should be fine. So long as you remind me this happened when the results are given. Not sure if an hour is enough time for her pills to be absorbed? Maybe, maybe not, but ONE dose is not going to drastically alter her baseline levels. It is just that if the gas is drawn TOO soon, then the levels are artifically high as the blood is flooded with suppliments. TOO early after pills is FAR worse then too late, for accuracy. I had already rescheduled her appointment but will be good to know for next time, just in case.

I always do the full panel. The issue is that a partial, you still only have partial. And if you suspect issues, you end up running them anyway. Of course it helps that a full panel here is not that much more than a partial (I think it was a bit under 60 or 140 for full). LOL though I did full on Sayblee because she WOULDN'T eat and full on Arwen because she gets almost nothing to eat in order to keep weight down. Both were fine.

@dcmclcm4: What kind of autoimmune problem does she have? Does she have any other eye problem or just the PPM strands? Jennifer @sharronhurlbut: So when you see blue eyes on a b, its PPM strands? Sayblee had autoimmune issues and had multiple surgeries to remove inflammations. She died 9/9/09 from Lymphoma after 5 mos of failed chemotherapy protocols. I actually posted about it here, think I even put up pictures. Arwen only has massive PPM strands. She will be 8 in 2 wks, thus far has been healthy as a horse otherwise. When I say blue, I don't mean REALLY blue as in pigment. I meant just so many strands they have very blue cast and you can easily see the strands in the light. The UGA eye specialist doing CERF said.. "wow, I haven't seen this many strands in a very long time!" He asked me to bring him back to him, FREE, to see how many went away after a year. Some did but she still has heavy strands.

@khanis: Pat…....... that line means that if your puppy is out of two fanconi clear parents, it doesn't need to be tested to find out whether or not it will ever get Fanconi... I should have been more clear, as of course we know that I am aware of what should/should not require testing. If anyone wants that article, feel free to email me [bennyburnerbono at aol dot com] and I can send it in a word document. I have another one as well…. having bred and lived with Fanconi Affecteds, I have had my eyes opened far wider than ever imagined to this disastrous disease! Kathy, I think that many of us have had our eyes opened really far wide… not only about Fanconi but about the practice of some breeders that many would consider "responsible"..... Sad as that is.... Thanks for posting that article... it is very well done... and should be an eye opener to many....

@ChaseandZahrasmom: I am so glad that you said that Pat I was a little worried when my vet, whom I have a lot of trust in was the one who had no idea what Fanconi was. I am definelty going to take this information to them tonight when I pick Zahra up, she is there for a teeth cleaning right now. Do you think she is too young to be tested? She is 1 Year 9 months. She is not too young to be tested, but like Lisa said, unless you get the sample in by December 20th, you will have to wait till after February as they are going to concentrate on the Direct linkage test. And there is no reason that you can't wait at this point.. the linkage test was mainly for breeders this past breeding season. For you, I would say wait till after Bebruary and see if we get the direct test…. But you should at age two strip test until you do get the DNA test done In order to do the DNA test you need to register/add your B to the CPP data base and print out the form for the test that tells your Vet how much blood and how/where to send. All that information is at www.basenjihealth.org
