  • @tallulah:

    Tanza,
Thanks for the information on foxtails. I did not understand what you were referring to :) I had no idea that they could go up your dogs nose. Tallulah is definitely pawing at her nose. I'll make an appointment with my vet as soon as possible.
I would love to check out Basenji Club of Northern California.

You are very welcome, hope to see you at one of the club's events…

  • @tallulah:

    Hello everyone,
My name is Jill and I have a 2 year old female basenji named Tallulah. I am so happy I found this forum. I was searching for dog allergies and here I am :D
Tallulah has recently been sneezing and pawing at her face. I am becoming quite concerned and am wondering if there is anything I can do to help. Tallulah is my first basenji. I purchased her from a pet store back in Colorado. I like to think of it as a rescue. She was not in a very good environment but that face and those wrinkles…I had to take her with me. She has been by my side ever since.
I thought I was the only one who had a "special dog". This is great. Thank you again and I look forward to hearing from other basenji owners soon.

    Jill

Hello Jill and welcome to the forum. In my opinion, if you think that there is something that might be causing Tallulah to have an allergic reaction, wouldn't you want to think about consulting your vet first before doing anything? I would venture to think that the Vet would also be the one to direct you in regard to properly treating Tallulah and what might be causing her discomfort.

    Hope this helps,

    Jason

  • Hello Jason,
I contacted my vet when Tallulah started sneezing. The vet indicated to me over the phone that her sneezing was quite common. They suggested a small dosage of benedryl which other form members suggested too. I gave her a small dosage the other day and it just made her very groggy. She still paws at her eyes and nose and it was suggested on this forum that she may have an object in her snout. It has me concerned so i'll be taking her into the vet to have her looked at tomorrow.
Hopefully we can figure out what is causing her so much discomfort and come up with a resolution.
    Thank you.
    Jill

  • I am glad to hear you are going to take her to the vet. I really dislike giving any kind of drug to my dogs unless absolutely necessary. I even hate taking any kind of drugs myself.

Please let us know what you discover.

    Jason

  • Welcome to the forum – you'll find lots and lots of good information here.
When you get the chance post some pictures -- we're addicted to them.

  • Welcome to the forum! I would LOVE to see some pictures of your girl!

  • Normally a dog's immune system keeps the mites in check, but some breeds, like your Basenji, develop an overabundance of these mites. In mild cases, pet owners may notice a few dry, irritated, hairless lesions. These often occur on the face or feet and may or may not be itchy. Secondary skin infections may occur.
But comedy aside, dog boots perform a necessary function Boots protect your dog's sensitive paws from the ice and snow as well as other cold-weather hazards such as road chemicals and salt. Read on for the benefits of boots, and get some great tips for getting your dog to wear boots

@julia87 How much do you know about Basenjis? Have you met any? It's highly recommended to learn as much as possible about them before making a decision to acquire one. This would be a good place to start.

Welcome-Basenji's=two year olds (I want, I will get what I want, you can't make me, phthhht on you, did I do that?) Yeah, it's never THEIR fault, it's always yours. Unfortunately, I've been in your situation until it didn't work anymore and placed the one girl with my son and his girlfriend.

Sorry, no, I'm in San Diego. But if you ever head South…:D It looks like there's a pretty active club up in your neck of the woods. Maybe they have meetups you could join? Not so much here, that I know of, though a lovely woman I met through Karen has 3 b's in a community near here. We have 2 basenji mixes in our neighborhood that we've discovered (your dog will find those for you if you take her to a dog park or a popular walking area). Congrats again - can't remember if your post said this was your first B, but aren't they just amazing?
