Hi everyone!!!!

  • @Ninabeana26:

Remember you have a male puppy & literally they pee every 20 minutes when they are active  I learned that the hard way. Haha. Just continue to be persistent, train him to ring the bell to go out. However, until he learns take him out after/during any of the following:

Upon first waking up in the AM
    Right after eating/drinking anything
After/during playtime as they have to pee more often during play
After any nap, even if it's only a 10 minute "cat" nap ;)
    Right before bed
Until old enough, probably in the middle of the night as well

Remember a puppies bladder is still tiny so they cannot be expected to hold their pee any more than 1 hour for every month old they are +1. So if he is only 3 months, he shouldn't be expected to hold his bladder longer than 4 hours & that is NOT including play time or eating.

That's what I have been doing but not after he plays so I will start taking him out after he plays. :) I bought the bell at petsmart today ;) and I'm using it every time we go out. I can't wait till he rings it on his own. :D

You will need to have blood drawn and have the Fanconi test done. Please learn about Fanconi at www.basenjihealth.org (and other Basenji afflictions that all owners should be aware of)

On Milos next visit to the vet I will ask the doctor if they can run that test. Thank you for the web site.

  • @Janneke:

Welcome! Your puppy looks really cute!! Hope to see more pics soon!

I love this one. I have it as my screen saver. :D

  • The vet can draw the blood, but the test must be done at U of Mo. You have to enroll the dog in the Canine Phenome Project and send the paperwork with the blood to Missouri. I second Pat; go to the Basenji Health Endowment site and you can get all the details as well as a link to the Canine Phenome Project.

BTW, there are Basenjis in Spring Valley, Lakeside, Blossom Valley (El Cajon address), and Penasquitos, just as a start!

  • @LiveWWSD:

Welcome to the pack. What a cute boy you have there. Can't wait to see more pics :D

    Thanks :D

I like this one too. :o Milo was sniffing the slurpie. on daddy's lap and it looks like he's drinking from it. :D

  • OMG…That is SOOO CUTE I almost fell out of my chair when I saw that one. :D

Your Vet can NOT run the test, they can only draw the blood, but it must be sent to U of Mo.. and you have to register your dog on the CPP site.. (which is free)

Really. Can I tell them to send it to U of Mo..?

  • @Nathalie:

Really. Can I tell them to send it to U of Mo..?

You have to register your pup on the CPP site, then you can download the form to use for your Vet to sent the blood sample to U of Mo. You can't sent it without the form.

Please go to www.basenjihealth.org, there is a link to the CPP site and also questions/answers regarding the Fanconi Test, here is the CPP site link
    http://www.caninephenome.org/

Also still on the Basenjihealth site it still says that the Fanconi test has been suspended for a time, but that just has not been updated. It was re-started as of March 15th.

  • Most vet offices will draw the blood for you but will not ship it. You will need to make the arrangements to have the blood shipped to U of Mo. The instructions for how to do so are on the submission form that you print once you have enrolled your dog.

I agree!! You could tell she was bored with the whole thing and that was when she got all defiant!!! How do they keep them from not getting distracted when they do the classes at say Petco? We are going in Feb. and I am a little concerned about it.

I am a huge "Bryan Gregory Fan" also, LOL He is is very particular about the dogs he will breed. He does great at follow-up once you get your puppy home, too; is always available to give advice, answer questions, etc. {And Lord knows he is patient with first time Basenji owners, very patient, …<grin> I love to watch Jazzy when she sees him at shows. She loves him! I'm hoping he sticks around for a few more years -- have to give me time to convince my husband that "we" want another Basenji after my older mixed breed dog dies. LOL {Poor man, thinks Jazzy is my last dog.} And if I get another one, I'd like it to be a Jumoke pup.</grin>
