• You can bring your pup around with a gentle obedience class and lots of
    consistant scheduling.
I also agree, having the blood work done asap, so you will know what to expect.
Sometimes fanconis does skip a dog, and I hope it does for yours.
So, take a deep breath, know we will be here to support you, and know your love will do a lot for this pup you have.
    Hugs dear.

  • (((Ellen)))

My Dakota was pet shop puppy and although I had many problems with his behavior, I was lucky that he was never seriously ill all the years I had him. He never did crate train, he hated the crate and would poop and pee in it and when I got home would be sitting in the corner giving me a "see what you made me do" look. With all the problems I had with him, I loved him like crazy and he gave me years of joy that I will never regret.

I learned after getting him about puppy mills and have since gotten all my dogs from breeders. I also try to educate as many people as possible as to where pet store puppies come from and tell them to get breeder referrals from the parent breed club. Sometimes they listen, sometimes, they don't.

I too agree that you should get Trixie's blood tested, then you will know one way or another. Hopefully she will show as a carrier or even clear and you can rest easy. Before this test was available no one knew what they were breeding, now, luckily they do. Apache came back as Probably Affected and I will be devastated when and if he starts spilling, but it won't be a surprise and whatever happens, we'll deal with it. Remember that there is a great protocol out there and many dogs do very well on it.

Most of all, just do what you're doing and love that little girl of yours….each day with them is a blessing.

  • I must tell you, I had a fanconis boy.
This was before all this new info re helping the dogs live longer…
Anyway, when I was crying and moaning about his health and maybe losing him sooner, a dear friend said
"does the dog know he is sick and maybe going to die?". No, I said..
So, why not take your clue from your dog and live each day with joy and
    pep?
I really do believe that dogs are put here to show us that focusing on anything but "right now" is a mistake that people make.
Dogs know we only have "right now" and they use it to full advantage.
    Hugs dear.
Take your clue from your dog.

  • Thank you everyone for your responses. I am going to be getting Trixie's blood tested next week. Already made the appointment with her vet. I don't know if the vets office understood what I wanted as they have never had a Basenji that they took care of but we will see how it goes. I am not panicking anymore and like I said we will deal with whatever is thrown our way. We love the little girl unconditionally, (obviously because lots of people have told us they would have gotten rid of a dog like her ages ago) and will keep on trying to give her as stable and loving environment as we can!! Buy the way she spends much more time in her crate now that we switched to the bigger one and is doing so good with the crate. I am so proud of her!! She never potty's in it, but she does have quite a collection of toys, blankets, you name it she has taken it into her crate! I look at it like this, she has caused more laughter in our home than we have had in years!!

  • Good luck Ellen, you certainly have a good support group here.

  • I understand completely, they are the best for bringing on the laughter! They are the best!!!!:D 😃 😃

  • I do know that someplace you can download info for your vet to have re the testing, and such.
I just can't remember where I saw it.
Maybe someone else had it and can share it with you.

That would be wonderful if anyone has that information. I do like Trixie's vet very much, and he is alway so fascinated with Trixie and willing to talk with me, I am sure he would look up any information needed. Thank you!

Are you talking about the DNA test for Fanconi? The site is www.basenjihealth.org and there is the link to the CPP site. You need to register your Basenji on the CPP site (that is free) so that when the sample is sent they know where to link the DNA that is extracted.

  • Please note ALL.. your vet can NOT do the DNA test, they can only draw the blood and have it sent to U of Mo…. please read the details at www.basenjihealth.org

  • ((Hugs)) to you…you know you can count on this forum for support, venting and laughs to cheer you up, if needed.
