It’s great that you’re doing your homework on the basenji. I think the reason you read all these “horror stories” is because they are not your typical dog. They are a beautiful and highly intelligent breed with a very strong prey drive. My Kembe is my first basenji but I was familiar with the breed because my brothers were basenji owners. I got her when she was 1years old - she was returned to the breeder by the previous owners. Kembe has never been destructive, she has free reign of our house, and I can leave her at home alone. It’s extremely important to exercise them regularly - especially exercise and stimulate their minds, and establish a routine (I can set my watch to my dog). They are definitely trainable - it scares me to see how smart she is and also well behaved. Basenjis are extremely lovable and hilariously funny. If I have a treat that my dog especially likes - she will do her whole “repertoire of tricks” without me even asking her. She dances to let me know it’s time to eat and will sit right next to me and hit me with her paw when she wants to go for her walk.
I think our basenji chose us - when we went to the breeders home to look at her - She jumped up next to my husband on the couch and curled up! I was sold on her! I really hope you find a basenji that right for you!

Can we get a list of favorite foods for basenjis that is healthy and can be added to their regular food?
Mine love:
Boiled chicken
boiled eggs
pumpkin pie filling
watermellon
-
Mine absolutely die for
lettuce
bananas
-
Sweet potato's, skins and all
-
But as I understand it, the skin is not the best thing for dogs?…. but yes, mine love Sweet Potatos too, of course all meats, 90% of all veggies.. and most fruits... and if you ever have a sick dog that needs to eat and doesn't want to... canned hash will do it every time....

What is the consequence of letting them eat the skins. I never heard that.

They'll generally eat anything we consider gross-unedible-etc.

We cook the sweet potato, mash everything up and add it to the kibble….on occasion.......it's not a regular part of their diet......but they really do love them.

Please pardon my ignorance…but what the heck is "hash"???
-
corned beef and hash comes in a can….it is in the spamalicious and vienna sausage family and is a camping breakfast favorite as well as some peoples' breakfast for those who enjoy salt in the morning.
a very salty meat, some variety of pork with bits of potatoe in it...heat it up and eat with eggs....
stinky salty maybe meat product that can taste really good at certain moments.....l

Oh, by the way, I would not touch it with a ten foot pole… gggg But the smell makes my B's go totally nuts!

I'm in hysterics, because we have always said there should be a dog food that is "cat poop" flavored.
-
By the way, our little Juma will eat almost anything in front of her. However, boiled hamburger meat is fun to add a bit to her food.

I'm sorry for anyone who likes canned hash-but, isn't that what it is? Canned "cat poop" flavoured sorta "meat"?

Here's my take on why dogs eat cat poop. The cat gets chased and terrorized by the dog. So the cat gets back at the dog by the poop having a magic spell on it that makes the dog hallucinate that it's a juicy steak hot off the grill. So the cat sits up on the fence having the last laugh watching the dog eat.
