RE: Walking more than one at a time
Yay! I'm a semi-normal Basenji owner! I've got 2 year-old (Katie Campbell) Basenjis, and one completely understands the walking and "no pull" command, while the other (a headstrong male) is the wonder-twin that likes to activate his power walking skills outside. We have taken him to obedience training and have practiced the stopping, turning, praising, …etc techniques thousands of times. I have a partially torn rotator cuff and a bucket of tears to show for my efforts. We have a yard and the dogs get lots of exercise, but we love to take them on walks. However, here's the question. I am thinking of using the sporn for our "power walker-puller" to minimize the frustration factor. Our breeder wants to show our male dog (the power walker) and I'm wondering if it is o.k. for outside walking and then he practices indoors on his show lead. Any ideas/recommendations/wine recommendations that will help minimize our walking frustrations?

RE: Leash Pulling…HELP!
O.K. I'm not the only one that gets frustrated. We have taken our year old Basenji to obiedience training and have practiced their techniques for loose lead walking THOUSANDS of times. I'm almost in tears and have a semi torn rotator cuff because of the training. We were told that harnesses do not work, and I am hesitant because our breeder will be showing him, to use the sporn. But, there's becoming fewer and fewer options for a pleasant walking experience. Our dog is fine indoors, e.g. showing, but as soon as we hit the fresh air, it's "Basenji Power Walking". Anyone show their dog and have similar issues?

RE: Gastritis…help..need support
Thanks everyone!!!! Little girl Juma is being cared for 24/7 at the fantastic local Seattle vet hospital. They are very optimistic that the antibiotics, IV…etc are going to help her recover in the next couple of days. Here's hoping for a better day tomorrow. Thanks so much for well wishes and prayers!!!! They work!

Gastritis…help..need support
Hi all.
Our 8month old Juma was extremely healthy on Monday. Tues didn't eat much, but we kept our eye on her. Wed. was normal, and then yesterday she started vomiting. We took her to the vet and they did all the bloodwork to rule out Parvo and Giardia. Things came back normal, but she continued to get worse and worse. This AM was so disheartening. Poor little Juma had thrown up during the night and this AM had blood in her very loose stool. Took her immediately to the hospital where she continues to receive an IV and electrolytes. They have diagnosed Gastritis and we are hoping and praying that she makes a turn for the better. Has anyone else ever experienced this with a Basenji??? -
RE: Spaying
Hello to the most knowlegeable Basenji owners!
We are getting ready to spay little Juma, and are wondering if females experience weight gain after? Our Norwegian Elkhound "porked" up a bit after her spay.
Thanks for any advice.

RE: Foods basenjis love
By the way, our little Juma will eat almost anything in front of her. However, boiled hamburger meat is fun to add a bit to her food.

RE: Foods basenjis love
I'm in hysterics, because we have always said there should be a dog food that is "cat poop" flavored.

Little Juma loves her older sister
Just want to share that we have a little 4 month old Basenji girl named Juma. She is an absolutely precious little monster that keeps us on our toes. She is now the younger sister of our Norwegian Elkhound, who is 13. Juma, terrorized Delaney at first, but now it's soooo sweet to watch them play. Juma runs around and around and around Delaney, then dives in to wrestle for a little bit. Delaney gets a big kick out of the wrestle matches and plays with Juma. Juma is wise beyond her years, and really seems to respect the relationship. (It helps that Delaney put her in her place the first couple of wrestle matches).
