• I'm curious about an odd behavior. Ever since we adopted our brindle boy, Buddy, Mr Baroo, our r/w boy, has been trying to groom Buddy's black stripes off. Mr Baroo will sit beside Buddy and lick and nibble at the black brindle stripes trying to make them go away. Other wise they are like two peas in a pod, sleep next to each other, hold B wrestling matches on my bed, and race around the yard together chasing every squirrel and bird that comes near. But when they lay down to relax, Baroo will invariably go to grooming the stripes from Buddy's back and sides. Has anyone else had this happen?

  • Grooming is pretty normal for some Basenjis, my Franie is forever cleaning C-Me's ears… and will nibble (or I call it "de-fleaing) her also

  • Digital had a little wart/bump near the inner corner of his eye. Zest! kept trying to wash it off of him. Hubby and I kept telling her it would not wash off. We were wrong.

  • I don't have a second but Oakley has been pretty incessant about licking my ears…and I attribute it to breeding season.

He is neutered but every breeding season he gets licky, is glued to me being lovey dovey and rubbing against me extra...and he also has a mild aroma of flowers...it's funny because he smells like a field of daisy's...it's happened two years in a row. Lastly, he's also much more intent on food this time of year.. I swear its all because its "that time of the year"!!

  • That's just plain funny, it must make you laugh. Maybe eventually Mr. Baroo will come to realize Buddy just "has this problem" with his fur and there's nothing to be done about it.

Wonderful story and made me laugh.
Something similar but opposite …. about a year ago our Libby (Lukuru Constellation Libra) had a bit of a party after everyone had gone to bed. She did some pole dancing on my desk lamp and scattered my work papers hither an yon. She then decided to take some pens (a red highlighter, a black magic marker, and a black pen with ink cartridge) to the family room where she proceeded to chew them. The black cartridge pen made a permanent pool of black ink on the carpet which she stepped in and left perfect little prints all across the couch and carpet. She also took the black magic marker and drew perfect lines on her fur. We laughed about what a perfect job she did making brindle stripes (she is red). It took quite a long time to grow out.

God bless you! I think I'd have a heart attack if mine spread a permanent pool of ink on the carpet and perfect little prints all over the rest of my stuff! You laughed - few would, and you have to have the most forgiving heart I've ever heard about. It's funny, for sure - but only because it happened to somebody else, not me!

There was nothing to forgive. She wasn't being malicious. She was just being herself …. a Basenji.

The truth is that after I found the situation and took her picture, I scooped her up and showered her with kisses. She is just so cute. She is irresistible. I'll try to post the picture ....

We have six basenjis that live with us. So, the couches are covered. I had to replace the covers. And as for the carpet .... just a bit of creative moving of the furniture made fast work covering the worst spot.
The only real lasting evidence was the lines she drew on herself. They eventually grew out.

  • Libby ….. caught drawing lines on herself.

  • LOL Jo, too cute!

  • People go blonde or red or black with their hair for a 'change'. Libby just wanted to see what it was like to be a Brindle!

Mr. Baroo, that is too funny about your r/w trying to flea-bite the stripes off of Buddy. He must think he is trying to clean the black fur out of him!
