New foundation stock approved

  • @DebraDownSouth:

Just an idea, but has BCOA ever considered requiring a test breeding and evaluate the pups before approving sire/dam?

When the 1st Avongara's were brought back this is what was done (not a requirment, but something they decided to do). And it was done before the AKC was petitioned to open the stud books. (I think that is correct)

The problem as I see it with these newer imports is the time factor. The stub books were opened for 5yrs (in 2008), not sure there is time enough to produce litters before submitting them for approval. The Ntomba imports were born approx January 2009, so it was maybe possible for them to have been bred and produced one litter and then made application, but that is pushing it. The ones just brought back this past winter, would not really be old enough.

  • I have seen the ones just brought back. Katie Campbell had them at the Seattle dog show. 3 puppies, one was a b/w. Many folks, who had been in the breed for many years thought they were quite nice and one old time breeder said this one a r/w, can't remember if it was male/female could be shown in the ring. We are all hopeful they will mature as nicely as they looked as small puppies.

Again, due to their age, it will limit what can and can't be done before the stud book closes again…. hopefully these that are brought in at the end of the limit will do some breeding among the ones brought back before introducting them to the general Basenji Fancy for breeding.

  • Pat, I do think that is the plan. They had 3 puppies at the show. I am hopeful they will be able to be an asset to the basenji group.
This is such an exciting time for all of us who love these wonderful dogs!

@danninyx - I believe that Katie Campbell email you and I that she will respond after she returns from shows this weekend. I believe that she will be able to help in some form...

The b/w are certainly interesting and look really cute - I know Jon saw them on a previous trip but they were very elusive. He told us that when he came to give a talk at our club show. You're very lucky as many of you'll, I assume, have the opportunity to see them 'in the flesh' in the future. I hope we'll see a lot more pictures.

@KiroGurl: how much would a red boy cost from most breeders? whATS THE AVERAGE? In the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, I'd say a safe estimate is around $1000 - $1200 for a puppy from a responsible, reputable breeder. Personally, I haven't found there to be a lot of variables with pricing when you go to a responsible breeder. Off hand, the only real difference in pricing I've seen seems to be that it does vary by region of the US - kind of like everything :D. If a breeder is pricing by colour, male vs. female, or AKC registered/not, I'd immediately look for another breeder - personally I would consider those red flags and RUN. There may be breeders that charge differently for pet vs. show, but there are plenty that don't - none that I've encountered do. A good place to start to find a responsible breeder is always the BCOA breeders directory at basenji.org. And don't forget to verify health tests on offa.org

As a newbie to the breed, I took this opportunity to try to learn more about the "Africans" :). What fantastic information it is too… I have downloaded all the information on these dogs, and I am currently in the middle of assessing these beauties myself, before I read what the 3assessors have said about them... I think I have done a pretty good job of critiquing them, I might add :D. Thank you for allowing a newbie to get such valuable info especially as it is such a huge project, and one that perhaps no other breed is able to do, (at least that I am aware of :)).

With the last litter Milo, the sire/dog, on occasions was a little rough when playing with them but not meaning to be. He is very good with his front paws - could teach him to tie a knot if I had the patience and loves to shake hands and also likes to give things a bit of a tap at times - like the cat when it is asleep - and he can tap a little harder than he means to at times. He's a year older now so I'm hoping he'll be a little more sensitive this time with the pups. Still, I will need to keep an eye on him.
