What do you mean withheld? There are members that most likely abstained because they were the ones that own the dogs. There were some that got there to late and some that "didn't" follow the directions for voting, not many however.

The ones I referred to are people that didn't bother to vote at all. Only about 1/2 of the membership voted. I am sure that many people figure that they have only pets that maybe came from rescue or even from a responsible breeder, but because they do not breed, show, etc… it was not important for them to weigh in with their vote. This I totally disagree with, it is everyones responsiblilty to take an interest in the longevity of our breed that includes health, temperament and conformation....

Overall, I was happy to see the numbers that were invalid or disapproved were so low. I completely agree with you about the number of members that didn't vote.It seems to me that if you make the effort to join the BCOA - to find members to sponsor you, you pay your dues and then join, then you would want to take part in such an important vote. For me as a fairly new member (a little over a year), it felt like a privilege to be able to participate in this vote.

  • @snorky998:

To clarify, when I went to the link I saw "Approved. Curby vote withheld" or "Approved. Curby and Schreiber vote withheld". I was just wondering what that meant.

In this example each of those people own a dog that was being voted upon…so I assume they withheld to avoid appearing to have a conflict of interest.

Me too! I find it strange that someone who cared enough to join the club wouldn't want to weigh in on the fundamental essence of the club….human nature is strange...

Both Curby and Schreiber submitted dogs, so it was appropriate for them to withhold their vote, since it was their dogs

I agree, while they might say, "I don't know enough"… then their responsibility is to learn... they are owners of the breeder and therefore, IMO have a responsibility to learn about the breed and be part of the solution to improve our breed for years to come.

    I agree 100%.

Just curious, but Pat, do you know if the African Stock vote had a higher or lower response level than the AKC Group Re-Alignment vote or was it about the same.

I don't know what the response level was for the AKC group re-alignment was and I don't think that it was noted any place either. However, I would guess it was lower then the Af Stock vote…. But then the response level for elections is really pitiful....

  • Cool! I've met one one of the puppies out of Rakita…very cool looking brindle. Can't wait to see him grow up. Wish I was already a BCOA member, I would have voted!

  • Beautiful dogs, thanks for sharing.

  • As a newbie to the breed, I took this opportunity to try to learn more about the "Africans" :). What fantastic information it is too…

I have downloaded all the information on these dogs, and I am currently in the middle of assessing these beauties myself, before I read what the 3assessors have said about them... I think I have done a pretty good job of critiquing them, I might add :D.

Thank you for allowing a newbie to get such valuable info especially as it is such a huge project, and one that perhaps no other breed is able to do, (at least that I am aware of :)).

I know Terry Reed is a breeder near Houston and currently has 2 litters. She also shows her basenjis. She was recommended when we looking for a Basenji when ours crossed the Rainbow Bridge last April. We ended up rescuing a mix instead since we didn’t want to wait but had no reservations about getting a puppy from her if we needed.

@KiroGurl: how much would a red boy cost from most breeders? whATS THE AVERAGE? In the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, I'd say a safe estimate is around $1000 - $1200 for a puppy from a responsible, reputable breeder. Personally, I haven't found there to be a lot of variables with pricing when you go to a responsible breeder. Off hand, the only real difference in pricing I've seen seems to be that it does vary by region of the US - kind of like everything :D. If a breeder is pricing by colour, male vs. female, or AKC registered/not, I'd immediately look for another breeder - personally I would consider those red flags and RUN. There may be breeders that charge differently for pet vs. show, but there are plenty that don't - none that I've encountered do. A good place to start to find a responsible breeder is always the BCOA breeders directory at basenji.org. And don't forget to verify health tests on offa.org

Ziki is actually younger than Lema and Mopaya so all three were old enough to be presented. One reason dogs may not be presented as soon as they are old enough is that the owners may not have been in a position to get all of the evaluations completed on time. It can be very time consuming to find available evaluators and if they are not near you, it can be expensive to travel to them.

But the part that you highlighted about in season bitches is not likely to occur at a dog show. I do not allow other dogs at shows to lick my dogs nor do I allow my dogs to lick other dogs at a show. I have not seen any study that shows that an in season bitch is at significantly higher risk than any other dog at a dog show. If you are taking reasonable precautions with your dogs while at a show, I don't see that they are any more likely to contract an infection than the other dogs at the show. Actually, this past year I bred a bitch who came into season early and specifically asked my repro vet about bringing her to show because it would break the major if she did not show. My repro vet said that it was fine as long as I took reasonable precautions like using a crate and not allowing her to explore the grounds with her nose in everything. She whelped a healthy litter of 4.

The Basenjis that I have, have Champions and Dual Champions in the first 5 generations both Sire and Dam, plus the dog/bitch itself is a Conformation Champion, Duel Champions (Field and show ring) along with Obedience….. that doesn't mean that I think they should or need to be bred... and that said, were not...
