Basenji-less soon :(

Basenji Talk
  • Well. I was without for 8 months, 8 very very very long months. I was so fortunate to have Janneke take care of my Lycia.. but she most certainly remembered me when I arrived to see her. There was absolute zero gap in our relationship when I took her back to Edinburgh with me. Don't be afraid! Sometimes we can't always be with them for their best interest.

  • Shouiffy, I was hoping you would respond as well since I remembered that you and Lycia were separated for quite a while. That does make me feel better, although I know I will be going through Cody-withdrawal after a few days.

  • Thanks to a few problems, I had to return to NC early. It was disheartening because now I have to come up with a new MA research project in half the time….. BUT now I can sleep a little easier.

It's kind of crazy, because I used to complain about his paws pushing into my back as he stretched out, and waking up in the middle of the night on the edge of the queen-sized bed with him comfortably sprawled out in the middle, but now I can't sleep without the little bed hog... sharp nails and all :) I had such a hard time sleeping without him.

He was a bit stand-offish when I showed up at the door around midnight... for about 5 minutes. (Over 15 hours in a car, in 102 degree heat, and my A/C went out about 6 hours into the trip, so I'm pretty sure I didn't look or smell like my normal self when I walked in the door  ) Then he realized who I was, and he followed me around while I brought in my bags and curled up tightly against me when I finally sat down. He's not an affectionate boy, but he was affectionate in his own way, and I can tell he is happy that I am back.

I've really missed my little butthead.

  • Welcome back! I'm surprised it took him even 5 minutes for him to recognize you. But I'm happy for your happy reunion.

Bowpi does the bedshove thing too. That description of your nightly ritual made me chuckle with recognition.

  • Welcome back!

  • Of course Cody remembered you…........ :) welcome home!

  • Oh wow, I can only imagine how stressed you are at having to come up with new idea, but am sure glad you are back with your buddy!

  • So happy to hear that you're home again…and I know Cody feels the same way..:)

  • Ok, don't send a towel, use a flannel type material to sleep on and send to him to put where he sleeps. They can shred the towels into long stripes, ingest them and then here comes the vet visit and maybe surgery to remove.

  • I expect Cody will help you with your new ideas - just enjoy him - I bet he's not unhappy about your early return!!!

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!

OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
