Behavioral Issues

  • Update!

Last days I had a terrible connection with my internet, I wanted to post this earlier but here it is!
Ryan is doing great, he is no longer that very little boy but he becoms a beautiful little fellow :D
He is so happy, making his first "words" (read: brr ugh, oh) and sure kicks a lot with his little legs!

The dogs become more in love each day, they always keep close to him and give him hugs..
We sometimes have to say it's really enough because otherwise we have to clean Ryan up after their "cleaning" job on him.

Chafuko always wants to sit next to me when I'm feeding Ryan.
I have one hand free and with that I can pet Chafuko.. he loves it..

Her a few pics, Ryan 4 weeks old (he is now already 5 weeks and this weekend were going to make new pics)

I do have to say, I don't think babys look great on pics, they always look a bit silly :D

Thank you so much for the update.
Lovely pictures, I think he is darling, and the one with you and your boys on the sofa, very nice.

  • What a gorgeous little boy, such big Blue eyes. Thanks for the update :)

  • Ryan is one handsome little guy he takes a great picture. I love your other two kids on the other side of you that is great. All of you look great and I must say Kim you have that I am a happy mom look.

  • Wow, Ryan's getting so big. Thanks for the updated pictures.

  • Wow, I am so encouraged by your family. My wife and her friends were having reservations about having dogs around during her preganncy and when the baby is due (Singaporeans are abit neurotic about pregnancy and health matters, they always assumed the worst). I have two Bs who can by really hyper one moment and flat out lazy the next. They recommended me to give the dogs away but they often got my growl as a reply.
I can proudly show your pics to them and proved that Bs and babies can go together.

  • Good luck Ayaka, hope everything works out well

  • Ayaka, speaking from my personal experience, my daughters dogs always turned out to be not only her best friends, but her personal body guards. The bonding from infancy is something pure and unconditional and I think both dogs and children gain something from this.

Why not start a new topic of discussion, Ayaka?

    Yes, they really can!
The only thing we do is keep an eye on them, always. ;)
    It's a great team..

  • Darling baby and pretty mama.
My fur-kids love babies and children.
My friend visits with her two girls - the youngest sits on top of my 100# Shep and watches TV. We found the little girl asleep on top of Kira and Kira was sound asleep, too, with a Basenji on each side of them. Too cute.

  • Ahem Where was your camera?

  • It is amazing thing which is happen to you. Ya, every female has mommy feelings. And I am sure your your baby also love pat animals too much. Pat will take care of your baby.

I was a little pre-occupied earlier today, and Doodle displayed her displeasure at my constant delays... how? She got up on the sofa and did this little prancing-dancing thing. Like she was saying, "haha, look at me misbehaving". LOL oh yeah.... if that is her "breaking bad", I'm in trouble, she's got my heart!

It would be useful to know more about this dog. Has resource guarding been an issue in the past? Has he bitten either you or your wife before? (a real bite, not playful nipping). Or anyone else? A dog that isn't used to children may be fearful of their loudness or quick movements. Perhaps you could do some socialization work with him, e.g. hanging around places where young kids congregate to accustom him to their noise and activity. Obviously not allowing any interaction as you are unsure of his behaviour. Dogs react differently to newborns. In my experience bitches are more likely than dogs to be tolerant, but it is very much the individual dog's reaction that counts. People have been blindsided when their supposedly tolerant and gentle dog turns out to be hostile to a young child. Bottom line, no dog should be left unsupervised around young kids, so in any event you would have to monitor his behaviour carefully once your baby arrives. On a personal note, of the five Basenjis I have owned, two bitches were entirely reliable with kids, the other was tolerant as long as they respected her space. One of the males adored children and was curious about them, the other curious but uncertain and would react to fast movements. I did not trust him and controlled any interaction closely. IMO, he would have bitten had he felt threatened. And kids, especially babies, tend to grab and pinch, ears, tails, whatever. Caution is always the safest route.

Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

Agree with Debra: apart from any medical issues, it looks like he is protecting the new life. Cute as it may be, it's not his job. Your husband should step up to the plate and take first position in a clear way. All the best!
