  • @Basenjimamma:

What a beautiful babyboy..he is so tiny. I love the picture of him in his "inside my stomach-pose" , precious.
The dogs did great, because they know Ryan is a part of the family and he is not here to take over their lives, simply to be part of their lives..
Great pictures, congrats on your new parenthood and many fun, years ahead..

That is my favorite pic too….I also love the wording on Ryan's baby card.

Kim, he is adorable...super huge congratulations! Thanks so much for sharing the pictures....they brought tears to my eyes :) Enjoy your new life...and try to get some sleep :)

  • oohh Kim, I almost cryed when I saw the pictures, what a beautiful baby and the dogs they are real " brothers & sister " for Ryan ;) we can't wait to visit you all, even Tiemen is exited allthough he is "scared" of babys as he is scared he will hurt them because they look so fragile :D

  • Congratulations to you and family! Ryan is adorable! Thank you for sharing these precious sweet moments. :):)

  • First Basenji's

Ryan is so beautiful! The pictures with the siblings are so sweet. Congrats again!

  • OMG, I'm so behind on this thread. Congrats to you and your family! :D:D:D

  • I missed the big news, congratulations on this new arrival, great photo report,
your pack is just so sweet.

  • Ryan is absolutely beautiful! I love the pictures. I think my favorite picture is the one with them keeping an eye on your grandmother while she holds the baby. Your announcement card is adorable.

    Pat

  • Thanks for all the sweet words :D We read it together (kas and I) and we're very happy with it!

Yesterday, the B's were sitting next to me and Ryan was lying in front of me.. I think it's a great picture.. And yes… I know I wear a very ugly suit :D

    And a little funny picture:

When I'm all back to my normal "me" I will be more posting on the forum..
During these days, I have to take some rest.. (the midwife and Kas become sooo angry when I don't want to take some rest… so I'm not so much on the computer.. I've a lot of doggie pics I want to share.... have to wait with that)

  • Lovely lovely pics Kim. Kas and the midwife are right though you must get enough rest, try to sleep when Ryan does. Your body has been through a lot and you need to build up your strength.
OMG i feel like your mum :D sorry to nag you :D

  • Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful new son! You look lovely, and the photos and story of your dogs bonding with the baby are truly wonderful. Your dogs are really amazing. Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with all of us! Now, do as Kas says and rest!

  • Houston

Great pictures, you look great..I would not even think about what you are wearing, be comfortable and rest, rest, rest..when you can.
I know it is boring, I had a hard time with it, I felt great, no pains after either of my births, but the rest is important for future sleepless nights..
We can all wait for the pictures until you are up to it and have the time, meanwhile enjoy your new enlarged family..

  • Thank you for the pictures and you look very pretty. Your a new mom and you still are glowing. I just love the pictures of babies right there with you and son. I do so agree that pictures can wait to be posted. The more you rest the faster and better you will be so rest and enjoy. Kim it go's so fast and you close your eyes they walk close them again there in school. All of you just sit back enjoy and you "REST".

    Little Hi from Ryan

    With daddy's big hands!

I have the most wonderfull picture on my camera… Ryan is resting in a little baby chair on the ground (yes with lots of warm blankets) and Chafuko has taken the spot below his chair, with his head on the little blanket :D Tooo cute!

  • Ryan is very handsome and dad's hand looks giant. I am so happy that the kids all love Ryan that is so very special. I am sorry you have colds old German method put vicks on bottom of your feet put on some heavy socks and crawl into bed and rest. My children never had vicks on there chest always on bottom of the feet.
Can hardly wait to see the picture of Chafuko sitting by chair head on blanket making sure no one takes the baby what a love. Take care and get us up to date and thanks. Who knows if I have spelled anything correct on here I am on laptop and keys are different then the keyboard keep looking for the mouse.

I was a little pre-occupied earlier today, and Doodle displayed her displeasure at my constant delays... how? She got up on the sofa and did this little prancing-dancing thing. Like she was saying, "haha, look at me misbehaving". LOL oh yeah.... if that is her "breaking bad", I'm in trouble, she's got my heart!

It would be useful to know more about this dog. Has resource guarding been an issue in the past? Has he bitten either you or your wife before? (a real bite, not playful nipping). Or anyone else? A dog that isn't used to children may be fearful of their loudness or quick movements. Perhaps you could do some socialization work with him, e.g. hanging around places where young kids congregate to accustom him to their noise and activity. Obviously not allowing any interaction as you are unsure of his behaviour. Dogs react differently to newborns. In my experience bitches are more likely than dogs to be tolerant, but it is very much the individual dog's reaction that counts. People have been blindsided when their supposedly tolerant and gentle dog turns out to be hostile to a young child. Bottom line, no dog should be left unsupervised around young kids, so in any event you would have to monitor his behaviour carefully once your baby arrives. On a personal note, of the five Basenjis I have owned, two bitches were entirely reliable with kids, the other was tolerant as long as they respected her space. One of the males adored children and was curious about them, the other curious but uncertain and would react to fast movements. I did not trust him and controlled any interaction closely. IMO, he would have bitten had he felt threatened. And kids, especially babies, tend to grab and pinch, ears, tails, whatever. Caution is always the safest route.

Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

@sarahmiri - I would say no to carrying him.... don't pick him up, but get down to his level as Zande pointed out in her response.

IMO it is a myth that Basenjis cannot have good manners on a walk. Yes, great if you can do off leash, but when circumstances dictate that a leash is necessary then walking calmly without a lot of drama and pulling should be achievable. Personally I do not like long lines or flex leashes. Or allowing dogs to eat whatever they find on the ground, which can in some cases earn you a trip to the vet or worse. Like most dogs, Basenjis are not overly discriminant about what they will ingest. A short leash and being observant can protect them from unwelcome outcomes. Mental exercise will also go a long way with any dog. But one should have a definite opinion about who is running the show, and it should not be the dog....they are quite willing to take up the position should you abdicate.

Agree with Debra: apart from any medical issues, it looks like he is protecting the new life. Cute as it may be, it's not his job. Your husband should step up to the plate and take first position in a clear way. All the best!
