What does your basenji like to 'sing' to?

Basenji Talk
  • While replying to a thread, it got me thinking. What does everyones basenjis like to 'sing' to?

Mine are not very vocal but the favourite in this house has to be the theme tune to 'Coronation Street'. I heard all three of them singing to it for the first time a couple of nights ago. It was so very tuneless! lol :D

The other favourites which set them off are the 'Countdown Clock' and the 'Neighbours' theme and 'Emmerdale' can sometimes raise a whimper too!

  • In this house it is Emmerdale everytime:rolleyes: it use to be just Kwame that did but now Belle joins in and they actually sound quite nice together as Kwame is low and Belle is high. Will need to video it sometime and put it on here:D

  • Benji didn't used to sing. Would love to hear someone elses Basenjis singing though :)

  • Blaze sings when ever I touch the piano… no one else, just me.

  • @thunderbird8588:

You will often get a basenji chorus at shows! :D

  • @Knipper:

    How Sweet :)

  • Otis has yet to make a sound..as far as yodeling or "singing"..he does cry and yawn loud though..
Our foster Bana doesn't sing very much either, every now and then she will let one out…and then she looks as if she has no clue who just did that..

  • Arleigh hasn't try to "sing" to anything musical yet (my last one sang to my clarinet and harmonica). I can get him singing if he is feeling 'frisky' and I sing-song his name. I think he just likes to make me look bad when he won't do it in front of other people:)

  • Maya just sings along with me :D Not sure if it is a way of her trying to make me shut up cos my singing is terrible, or because she enjoys it and wants to carry on singing…

  • Jenson is the singer in our household, when I go to the office and take him with me along with Kalusha and Solar, he starts to sing when I am driving for 20 meters and stops singing at the first roundabout… I let him sing because he doesnt listen when I say NO, when I let him sing for those 500 meters he is very happy , and drags along solar and kalusha to sing as well,,,, but solars sing qualities arent very good ( dont tell her >grin < ) when Lio and Thirza ( the b'sof my parents ) are also in the car, Thirza sings a long as well, Lio just looks and seems to say " help" hahaha

when the girls are in season and I have to take them with me also then Jenson is allowed to sit next to me and he sings then about all the time, he responds to the command " sing" as well nowadays , and at home when we say SING he and our galgo Barry start to sing and most of the times Kalusha doesnt sing along but the 3 ibizans do

jenson also responds when we make the little sounds he does :D

  • Brando & Ruby both sing on command - I say "who has a song" right as they are about to get their dinner and they both sing. They both also sing to the video on YouTube of Zeke the basenji.

Liyah doesn't sing on command yet, but she does sing to her "7mo. female basenji friend" that she sees in the glass on the stereo cabinet…she sings to her, brings her toys to her, plays tag with her (this happens when the 2 adults are worn out by her and no longer will play with her)...it cracks me up :D:D. She also will sing to Brando if she wants him to play with her.

  • @Maya:

That sounds very funny!! You'll have to demonstrate it for us all at a show sometime. :D lol

  • Cody doesn't sing when I'm around :( When we first moved in with my parents, he would whine and scream when he saw me leave the driveway, so my mom would sing-song to him, which would get him going. Now when I leave, as soon as he begins to whine, she starts singing, and he will sing along. I just tell myself that when I'm with him, he's too happy to do anything but cuddle and play with me, lol.

    Um… Or not!! :o :p

  • We live near the train tracks and Bongo mimics the train perfectly. Amtrak makes him sing more than the Coaster (local commuter train).

  • Basenjibythebay..that is so funny. I would love to hear a train blow by and B's joining in..

  • If anyone is on Facebook, I have put a video of them on there which I filmed last night of their screeching session. I shall have to find out how to put it on You-Tube.
    (Victoria Gaskell).

  • I am on facebook Victoria, i assume you will need to request friendship for me to view your vid?
I am thunderbird8588 as on here, lol

  • Saw it lol, both of my 2 joined in with them:rolleyes:

I drove 20 or so minutes each way to my friend's horse far. Not one day did we miss seeing one or more dead dogs on the roads. Too many dogs in shelters picked up from being lost; or hit by cars. While my Rottweilers and first basenji were solid off leash, they only place they got to do it was at my friend's farm. And they weren't just turned out, I was out with them. In the old days, almost all dogs ran loose. The norm... and if they died or were lost... well, get another one. Many died. I quit talking to people about it. They say "they want to be loose" and I say "so do toddlers and 3 to 5 yr olds... I still don't open the front door and send them on the world. " They get mad, I get mad, nothing accomplished. We all take risks and avoid others. Unleashed is one of my "no" areas. And rawhide. Absolutely dogs raised in a village in Africa are not the same as here. I think most dogs don't get enough exercise and mind stimulation. When you do that with an intelligent breed like basenjis, you're going to get unwanted behaviors. You may want to read up on Dr Jo Thompson's work, as she also lived in Africa with these dogs. What wonderful experiences those of you who go to see where they came from.

Love it! I would not even dream of putting Dolce on the back of my bike. Firstly she hates when any wind blows in her face and freaks out when the windows are down in the car. Second, she is such a squirmer I fear she would wiggle herself right off the bike.

I love the 'new' lyrics! That's the wonderful thing - Basenjis love your singing even if you're tone deaf (like me)!

That would be OJ when he was young…. at his age now, he really doesn't have the teeth for it any more... but he was the king of tags rippers... and he was the only one, the girls had no interest at all...

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
