Please pray for Booger

  • @Andrew:

Right now, he has improved a good bit since mid-week. He's still spending the majority of his day and night sleeping, but he's getting up to eat, to go out & to greet us when we come home! Yay!

Definitely a good sign, I pray the improvement continues!!!:D

  • It is a really good idea for anyone with pets to get a blood panel done as part of their dog's routine yearly checkup. One problem with waiting until your dog is ill before ever running blood work is that your vet can only compare it the lab's reference range which is the average range that most dogs fall into. Unfortunately, that means if your dog is say normally in the high end of the range and then gets sick which causes a number to fall to the far low end of the range the vet may think nothing is wrong with the value since it is still "in the normal range" where in reality there has been a signficant change in that value for that dog. It is also why getting bloodwork done throughout the diagnosis process in a chronic illness is important so the vet can monitor for any changes in values over the course of time.

  • any updates?

  • I sure hope booger is doing better.

  • Sorry I haven't been online in a few days due to increased hours at work….

Booger has taken a definite upturn in the past few days. He still spends a lot of time sleeping, but its a bit less than before. I can tell he's getting restless and wanting to be a bit more active. He had several actual nose bleeds last week, but has not had one since. He is getting up to greet us when we come home, grooming Lola, chasing the cats, getting excited about eating & beating me to the closet where we keep the food, etc. In recent weeks, he would stay in bed until his food was ready & then return to bed as soon as he was done eating. This morning he jumped out of bed before me!
Yesterday it snowed, an experience neither Lola or Booger have had. I let Booger & Lola run around a bit in the snow. Booger actually scampered around with Lola for a few minutes before they got cold & wanted to go back in.
Over the weekend, Booger has had a quick turn around & is almost back to his old self. He still has two more weeks of antibiotics, and then we have to determine if there is still a foreign object or fungus hiding in the recesses of his nose if he is still sneezing. His nose is healing; its still a bit swollen & inflamed on one nostril.
Thank you again for all of the positivity & good wishes!

Isn't it funny how attached we can get to the basenjis in our online family? I've been worried too, and so glad to hear Booger is improving.

Doesn't sound silly at all… I have actually worried about other basenjis that get sick on the forum. I have been known to cry at both happy and sad endings, too. I think just owning one of these little creatures makes you very empathetic to other owners. Whenever another basenji on the forum gets sick, I imagine what if it were one of mine? It can be rather devastating.
We were at the point of making the final decision for Booger 2 weeks ago... I'm glad we held off for the blood test.

  • Things are looking up. Yea!! And I totally understand the attachment to basenjis that are not ours. Years ago, back in the days of the orginal Basenji-L there was a family who lost two basenjis in a house fire. I was getting ready to pick my husband up from the airport when the post came through on the list. I met my husband sobbing into a handtowel that I had grabbed just before I left the house. He, of course, thought someone in the family had died because I was crying so hard. Well, in a way… it was true -- the extended Basenji family.

Please keep us posted on Booger!

  • I am soooo happy to hear that Booger is feeling better! This news just made my day. :D

  • Yooo hooo Booger. Keep at it - we're all behind you.

  • Thank Goodness!! I have been worried.

  • Booger has been close to his usual self recently…. Last night we sat down to watch Lost, and he entertained himself with chasing Lola, throwing a plastic bottle to himself & climbing on the back of the sofa to better lick our hair. Andrew turned to me at one point and commented, "I forgot how annoying Booger can be." Haha.
Today he got to go to the park for the first time in about a month. He had a lot of fun running around with other dogs, but he had an interesting quirk he's never had before. Every few minutes he would run over & either lean on me or jump on me to get my attention. When I looked at him, he would look into my eyes & stare at me for several seconds before running off to play again. I swear he was saying "Thank you for not giving up on me Mommy. And thank you for bringing me to the park again."
I almost cried a couple of times.

  • Oh I'm so happy for all of you !!! A big hug and for Booger a little paw from Bendji from Belgium :D

My old girl Ella had a shattered rear leg from being hit by a car. My options were amputation or surgery. I opted for surgery. She did have a plate inserted but that was because she had bone pieces removed and the plate was there to connect what was left of her leg bones. We had casts, lots of casts. The vet told me to keep her quiet, not let her roam around, absolutely no stairs, and to wear an e-collar if not well supervised. Ella did not listen to the vet. I blocked the stairs with a baby gate but she managed to jump it while wearing the cast which went all the way up her leg. She perforated her e-collars to where I could use them as colanders. I also had to find a high calorie food (not high protein but high calorie) because the veterinary surgeon said she would need twice the caloric intake in order to heal quickly. I ended up hand feeding her a mix of kibble and canned food. She healed fast and well. Ella ended up with a slightly shorter rear leg but she could still run like the wind. She lived 11 more years and died at age 14.5. I have seen photos of the halo type device on one of the Facebook groups, "Basenji". You may have to join the group but here is the link to the post https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1904813413071092&set=gm.1407068002664730&type=3&hc_location=ufi I am sure you can contact the owner of this dog, Maria Eriksson‎, but please remember that English is not her native language as the "Basenji" group is international.

One thing you can do to help his coat is to bathe him every 1-2 weeks with Murphy's Oil Soap. Use your fingers and gently "scrub" him while he is soaped up. (Murphy's does not produce much lather so don't expect it.) The massaging will loosen dead hair and help it fall out. This stimulates new hair to grow. Murphy's has natural oils including coconut that help moisten the skin and keep it healthy.

@agilebasenji: Zest! has about 2 extra pounds he could have. Jet the trying also has a few to spare. I wonder if I can send them via the USpost. Spencer says "send 'em on– Priority Mail, please!" Though if he keeps being a little platelicker, he may reclaim his "love handles." For now, he is still the Angelina Jolie of the dog world.

@dmcarty: Especially when basenjis are younger - stripping them often and at different times of the month is good - that way you can see if something is going on. I had some folks who started stripping at 5 and at about 7 the dog was symptomatic but they had never turned strips - turns out that when they stripped the dog for a couple weeks every day - the strip would turn colors only SOME of the time. So essentially the dog was probably spilling earlier but doing it once a month - they missed when he was spilling. So use up those strips! Exactly right… I think the best way to do it is 3 to 4 days in a row... each month... because when they first start to spill sugar in the urine, they don't always show every day.... I remember that Parry's Jaadii did that... one day would spill, next two not... then the 4th he would...
