  • @EskiLovr:

I know it sounds silly, not really knowing you guys and all, but I have been actually worried about Booger.

I am so very glad to hear he's doing well.

Isn't it funny how attached we can get to the basenjis in our online family? I've been worried too, and so glad to hear Booger is improving.

Doesn't sound silly at all… I have actually worried about other basenjis that get sick on the forum. I have been known to cry at both happy and sad endings, too. I think just owning one of these little creatures makes you very empathetic to other owners. Whenever another basenji on the forum gets sick, I imagine what if it were one of mine? It can be rather devastating.
We were at the point of making the final decision for Booger 2 weeks ago... I'm glad we held off for the blood test.

  • Things are looking up. Yea!! And I totally understand the attachment to basenjis that are not ours. Years ago, back in the days of the orginal Basenji-L there was a family who lost two basenjis in a house fire. I was getting ready to pick my husband up from the airport when the post came through on the list. I met my husband sobbing into a handtowel that I had grabbed just before I left the house. He, of course, thought someone in the family had died because I was crying so hard. Well, in a way… it was true -- the extended Basenji family.

Please keep us posted on Booger!

  • I am soooo happy to hear that Booger is feeling better! This news just made my day. :D

  • Yooo hooo Booger. Keep at it - we're all behind you.

  • Thank Goodness!! I have been worried.

  • Booger has been close to his usual self recently…. Last night we sat down to watch Lost, and he entertained himself with chasing Lola, throwing a plastic bottle to himself & climbing on the back of the sofa to better lick our hair. Andrew turned to me at one point and commented, "I forgot how annoying Booger can be." Haha.
Today he got to go to the park for the first time in about a month. He had a lot of fun running around with other dogs, but he had an interesting quirk he's never had before. Every few minutes he would run over & either lean on me or jump on me to get my attention. When I looked at him, he would look into my eyes & stare at me for several seconds before running off to play again. I swear he was saying "Thank you for not giving up on me Mommy. And thank you for bringing me to the park again."
I almost cried a couple of times.

  • Oh I'm so happy for all of you !!! A big hug and for Booger a little paw from Bendji from Belgium :D

  • Woo hoo Booger!!! So glad you are feeling better!:D:D:D

My old girl Ella had a shattered rear leg from being hit by a car. My options were amputation or surgery. I opted for surgery. She did have a plate inserted but that was because she had bone pieces removed and the plate was there to connect what was left of her leg bones. We had casts, lots of casts. The vet told me to keep her quiet, not let her roam around, absolutely no stairs, and to wear an e-collar if not well supervised. Ella did not listen to the vet. I blocked the stairs with a baby gate but she managed to jump it while wearing the cast which went all the way up her leg. She perforated her e-collars to where I could use them as colanders. I also had to find a high calorie food (not high protein but high calorie) because the veterinary surgeon said she would need twice the caloric intake in order to heal quickly. I ended up hand feeding her a mix of kibble and canned food. She healed fast and well. Ella ended up with a slightly shorter rear leg but she could still run like the wind. She lived 11 more years and died at age 14.5. I have seen photos of the halo type device on one of the Facebook groups, "Basenji". You may have to join the group but here is the link to the post https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1904813413071092&set=gm.1407068002664730&type=3&hc_location=ufi I am sure you can contact the owner of this dog, Maria Eriksson‎, but please remember that English is not her native language as the "Basenji" group is international.

Thank you all. I can now talk about him without breaking down. I still tear up. I can look at his pictures and his toys. There's still a void and it's still painful and I still cry, but not as much. We have his ashes on the windowsill, one of his favorite places.

One thing you can do to help his coat is to bathe him every 1-2 weeks with Murphy's Oil Soap. Use your fingers and gently "scrub" him while he is soaped up. (Murphy's does not produce much lather so don't expect it.) The massaging will loosen dead hair and help it fall out. This stimulates new hair to grow. Murphy's has natural oils including coconut that help moisten the skin and keep it healthy.

@JazzysMom: Oh sorry, should have been more clear. I just sent my dogs' blood to Bryan, HE sent it on for testing. I was just replying as to where/how to physically mail the blood, not so much as related to the testing itself. Me too, should have been more clear, I was really responding to etzbseder about the CPP site and submitting blood, didn't even look to see the message was from you…. ggg

I was just about to add a post, when I had to leave and pick the kids up from school - saying that my Basenji did a similar thing. It started with her normally soft fur getting really coarse along her backbone. While I didn't notice any more than the usual tiny bit of shedding in the late summer months, it is now back to it's normal "super soft puppy like fur" too! Great news!
