Do Bs pee out of spite?

  • My 12-month B is potty trained and knows to go through the doggy door onto the balcony to pee. However this morning, he was playing with my rug and I firmly said no a couple of times for him to stop.

He proceeds to walk away and as I turn my back, he pees on my rug!

The doggy door was just 1 metre away! But also he usually waits for his morning walk to pee.

Are teenage pups vengeful? He's been very difficult lately!

  • Some people on here will disagree with me, but IMHO, yes some do. My first Basenji peed on my bed on a memorable night when I was out far too late and snuck in very quietly (I was still living with my parents), only to discover my bed was wet! My girl had been out before my parents went to bed, it was not the only time I came home after they had retired, my girl was used to the routine, but I think she was unhappy I was so late. Never happened before, never happened after.

Years later, my second Basenji bitch settled an argument my husband and I were having by leaping onto our bed and peeing right in front of us! Stopped the argument in its tracks, which I think was her intention. Again, never did it before, never did it after. So yes, I think some do. Think cat in dog disguise. (no question cats do this, ask any cat owner!)

  • I disagree, they mark to claim... not to spite... could be considered one in the same... however. Of course the way to stop that is close the doors.. LOL...

  • @eeeefarm and @tanza So, I’m gonna agree and disagree with both of you. You’re both right. Look we can’t talk to our Basenjis so we don’t really know what they’re thinking. Psychology and all that rot. Pissed off… claiming territory… yeah. Both make sense. Basenjis are emotional creatures. One of the things I love about them. Regardless… sounds like Basenji behavior to me. Embrace the journey! ✌️🤪👍

  • Basenjis will always seek to punish you when they deem your behaviour to be unacceptable !
Yes of course he pee-d deliberately to let you know his disapproval at being told no !

That is why I use the newspaper gambit. If they tear a newspaper I scream and shout and burst into tears. So if mine have ever felt I needed to be punished, they have found a newspaper and shredded it. Other people use a 'cushions on the floor' spiel. 'WHO threw the cushions on the floor ? BAD dogs, NAUGHTY dogs !'

Throwing cushions on the floor or shredding newspapers are hardly cardinal sins - but doing either gives the Basenji the satisfaction of thinking he/she made you mad !!

  • @Zande, my boy Sunny had separation anxiety and hated us leaving him home alone. After a few incidents with important stuff getting destroyed, we came to a compromise. He would locate and rip up a flyer or other paper, and I would verbally chastise him when I returned home. It worked for both of us, as your shredded newspapers worked for you. As long as I expressed my displeasure he had no reason to escalate. I found out by accident that he did his ripping as soon as we left, because one time I returned to the house for something I forgot, and looking in the window saw him "choosing" quite deliberately the item he would rip. Basenjis make life "interesting"!

  • @eeeefarm my husband seems to think that dogs are not vengeful so I am very glad to hear your experience with these little devils!

They sure do make our lives interesting 🤪

  • @zande i was definitely punished!! I know he knows I don’t like my rug being ruined so he will make sure he does what he can on the rug!!

  • @jengosmonkey haha definitely will! I feel like I am living with an annoying roommate rather than a loving companion 😂

  • @tanza

That is quite interesting and I guess he did want to let me know the rug was his 😂, and not mine!

  • @basenjinewb
My previous Basenji Kembe use to find something that belonged to you when she was mad. She would then SHAKE IT VIOLENTLY in front of you to let you know she wasn’t happy. She could be a spiteful b@#$%! But we loved ♥️her.

I have noticed my female besingi mix (18months) of age becoming more and more agressively towards me, children, and other dogs. She is very well socialized however she is becoming more dominant, wanting to nip at faces agressively when playing with dogs who too want to attack playfully at the face. However, she has become very aggressively to mommy when trying to keep her outside while I vacuum and she absolutely hates the vaccum and having the door shut closing her off from me. SHe tried to bite my arm (very agressive face with fangs out and fur up) last week and I had to use a broom in order to shut the door. Additionally, she snarls at children. Khloe and I are the only 2 in my household, so no kids and no one else. Only few friends and neighbors stop by but lately she is getting even more aggressive towards them, even if she knows them. I do not know what to do. We were kicked out of puppy training when she was 4 months old b/c she has severe leash aggression. She does work well with a clicker, but I dont always have the clicker on me. My vet today told me to come on here to see if you guys could potentially help or lead me to the right direction of contacting an animal behavioralist. He stated Khloe will only get worse if nothing is done. Additionally, I do not spank Khloe, I only use a clicker, but obviously does not show her that I am the dominant one. SHe also demands all of my time to the light up laser for hours on end and will not give up. Please help! Vonda

Btw, let me add… after about 5 mos, neutering often has NO effect on marking behavior. You should also treat ANY new dog, puppy or adult, as a puppy. Which means you either have them leashed to you, crated, or actively watching every single move. It is far easier to stop marking from starting (or any bad behavior) than correcting it once establish. You also need to go back to that when marking or other unwanted behaviors start. Sure, it's a pain in the butt, but easier than letting it become a habit then try to retrain.

Many puppies will totally forget about house training when they really start to teeth…. so just always go back to housetraining 101

Can I ask…my previous guy seemed to actually lick himself just so he wouldn't have an accident. Usually when I had left him for longer than normal 'cause I had errands or something. I would come home, let him out of the crate, but I always wanted to change clothes first and while I was changing he would, sometimes, just lick and lick, until we went out. Was he just putting up with me and being a really good dog?! Or being a perv?!

thanks to all your suggestions. this is the second day/night now and she has peed outside. She has started to go towards the door when she needs to go to do a pee, so i've let her out..stayed with her until she does (which has been very quick, it used to take 5 or so minutes but now only 5 seconds..which is great!! She gets alot of praise when she does and she is quickly allowed back inside. Fingers crossed it stays that way!! Yes all bedroom & toilet doors shut..i learnt not to let her out of our sight as she is very sneaky??? One more question which i find odd..why is there a need for her to clean up after herself after peeing on the floor or her bed??

It can take at least 6 months or more till they are truely house trained.
